Waterpox is caused by the accumulation of damp-heat pathogenic factors. Its external manifestations are mostly similar to those of smallpox (Da Dou). The lesions are round with pointed tips and contain clear fluid; they erupt easily and heal (jie ye) easily without forming pus.
At the initial stage, Jingfang Baidu San is used, followed by Jiawei Daochi San for subsequent treatment.
[Note]
Waterpox originates from the Spleen and Lung meridians and is caused by damp-heat. Initially, its symptoms resemble smallpox, presenting with a red face, red lips, bright watery eyes, coughing, sneezing, and thick, sticky saliva and nasal discharge. Fever persists for two or three days before the rash appears.
The lesions are pointed and round, relatively large, containing clear fluid, erupting and healing easily, without forming pus.
At the onset, Jingfang Baidu San is the primary prescription, followed by Jiawei Daochi San.
(Jingfang Baidu San) See formula in Jia Kou.
(Jiawei Daochi San) Ingredients: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Hua Shi (Talcum), Chi Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed).
Use Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medulla) as a guide, decoct in water and take orally.
(Verse)
Jiawei Daochi clears damp-heat; Sheng Di, Mu Tong, and Gan Cao work together; Lian Qiao, Huang Lian, Hua Shi, Qin, and Mai Dong combine; adding Deng Xin Cao as a guide is called a wonderful secret.

It is generally inadvisable for men to develop pox after reaching adulthood. This is due to the depletion of True Yin and deficiency of Yuan Qi. Once the pox toxin becomes rampant and fierce, if Kidney Water cannot control Heart Fire, how can the body withstand it?
If accompanied by heat, Shenmai Qingbu Tang should be used for clearing and tonifying. If promoting pus formation (Gong Jiang) is required, Shenguilurong Tang is appropriate.
[Note]
Men are considered "adults" from the age of sixteen onwards. At this stage, desires awaken, emotions stir, and Yuan Jing (Essence) leaks away.
When encountering the rampant fire of the pox toxin, True Yin is depleted, and deficient Water fails to control Fire.
Therefore, during the stage of pus formation (Xing Jiang), symptoms such as thirst, irritability, epistaxis, and sore throat often occur.
The lesions may fail to form pus, and some cases only scab over. Physicians must not recklessly use cold-natured drugs.
In the first five to six days, only Shenmai Qingbu Tang should be used for regulation.
By the seventh or eighth day, if pus does not form or progress, urgent Gong Jiang (promoting pus) therapy is needed. Use Shenguilurong Tang internally, combined with Ji Guan Xue Jiu (Rooster Comb Blood Wine).
As long as the pus progresses smoothly, there will be no cause for concern.
(Shenmai Qingbu Tang) Ingredients: Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, wine-fried), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Sheng Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, fried and ground), Sheng Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), Nan Shan Zha (Crataegi Fructus), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed).
Use Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) as a guide, decoct in water and take orally.
(Verse)
Shenmai Qingbu uses Dang Gui and Chuan Xiong, along with Hua Fen, Bai Shao, and Sheng Di; Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Qian Hu, Jie Geng, Niu Bang Zi, and Gan Cao, plus Hong Hua, Shan Zha, and Mai Men Dong.
