Treats hematemesis (vomiting blood) and epistaxis (nosebleed) caused by heat injury, hematochezia (blood in stool), metrorrhagia (uterine bleeding) in women, and red strangury (painful urination with blood).
Sheng Xijiao (Raw Rhinoceros Horn), Sheng Dihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Baishao (White Peony Root), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), these four ingredients. First, decoct the first three ingredients in water, remove the dregs, add Sheng Xiji (Raw Rhinoceros Horn Juice), and take warm.
[Annotation] The causes of hematemesis are threefold: labor injury (Laoshang), strain injury (Nushang), and heat injury (Reshang). Labor injury is primarily treated by regulating deficiency; strain injury is primarily treated by removing blood stasis; heat injury is primarily treated by clearing heat. Heat injuring the Yang collaterals leads to hematemesis and epistaxis; heat injuring the Yin collaterals leads to lower body bleeding. This formula treats heat injury, thus using: Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), which clears the Heart and removes the root of fire; Shengdihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix), which cools blood to generate new blood; Baishao (White Peony Root), which astringes blood to stop reckless flow; Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), which breaks blood stasis to expel it. Although this formula is said to clear fire, it actually nourishes Yin; although it is said to stop bleeding, it actually removes stasis. Once stasis is removed and new blood generated, Yin is nourished and fire extinguished, representing a method of seeking the root cause. If Heart Fire alone is excessive, add Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) to purge heat; if blood stasis causes chest pain, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Taoren (Persicae Semen) to expel stasis.
Treats conditions where Yang is excessive and Yin is deficient, causing reckless movement of hot blood, resulting in either hematemesis or epistaxis.
Shengdihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Sheng Baiye (Fresh Biota Tops), Sheng Heye (Fresh Nelumbinis Folium), Sheng Aiyi (Fresh Mugwort Leaves), each in equal parts. These four ingredients are pounded into a paste and formed into pills, the size of a chicken egg. Take one pill per dose, dissolved in boiling water.
[Collected Annotations] Ke Qin stated: When Yin is deficient and Yang has no attachment, fire flares up to the Upper Jiao; when Yang is excessive, the Yang collaterals are damaged, so blood overflows from the mouth and nose. Generally, the nature of herbs is cool when raw and warm when cooked; cooked forms tonify, while raw forms purge. These four ingredients are all cooling and cold in nature. By taking them all in their raw state and pounding them into pills without cooking, their aqueous qi is preserved, distancing them further from the nature of fire. Shengdihuang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix) is rich in essence, clearing the Heart and Kidney and unblocking the source of blood vessels. Baiye (Biota Tops) points west (symbolizing Metal), clearing Lung Metal and regulating Ying and Wei Qi. Aiyi (Mugwort Leaf) is aromatic, entering the Spleen and Stomach, excelling in the power to remove stasis and generate new blood. Heye (Lotus Leaf) corresponds to Zhen (Thunder/Wood), entering the Liver to harmonize the functions of storing and controlling blood. Once the fire of the Five Emotions is cleared and the Yin of the Five Zang Organs is secure, Yin and Yang will be balanced and stable, and blood will return to its vessels. This formula can be used temporarily to suppress reckless hot blood; however, excessive use will damage Ying Blood. Because blood congeals when exposed to cold, blood stasis will not disperse, and new blood will not be generated. If one only knows how to clear fire and cool blood but does not follow up with formulas such as Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) or Rongying Decoctions to consolidate recovery, many patients may die after years of continuous illness. This is not due to poor formulation principles, but rather the fault of those who misuse them.
