The exterior is deficient, allowing wind-pathogens to enter opportunistically, resulting in generalized and facial edema of a deficiency nature. After administering Wupi Decoction (Five-Bark Decoction) combined with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) to induce slight sweating, if the facial edema subsides but body swelling persists, Weiling Tang (Gastrodia and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) should be administered.
[Note]
After smallpox, children often have weak exterior qi. If exposed to wind too early, wind-pathogens enter through the deficiency, causing facial puffiness and generalized edema. Initially, it is appropriate to use Wupi Decoction (Five-Bark Decoction) to induce slight sweating. If, after taking the medicine, the face and eyes are no longer puffy but the body remains swollen, Weiling Tang (Gastrodia and Atractylodes Macrocephala Decoction) is the primary treatment.
(Wupi Decoction / Five-Bark Decoction)

(Decoction Verse)

Guizhi, Jiangpi, and Dafupi combined;
Decoct with Dengxincao water for consumption.

Miscellaneous Syndromes in Smallpox
Residual toxins remain uneliminated, generating smallpox toxins. Mild cases manifest as sores and boils (Chuangjie); severe cases develop into carbuncles (Yong). Internal administration of Jiedu Tang (Detoxification Decoction) is applicable; external application of Hongyu Gao (Red Jade Ointment) is effective.
[Note]
All residual toxins after smallpox arise because during the pustule-filling stage, the toxin qi was too excessive to be fully transformed. It remains stored in the meridians, gathering without dispersing. Mildly, it erupts as sores and boils (Chuangjie); severely, it forms carbuncles (Yong). Whether occurring in areas of thin muscle or at mobile joints, regardless of whether ulcerated or not, Jiedu Neituo Tang (Detoxification and Supporting Interior Decoction) is the primary internal treatment, while Hongyu Gao (Red Jade Ointment) is applied externally to the affected area.
