Treats the Shen Shui (pupil) gradually widening and dispersing, vision dim as if walking in fog or dew, gradually seeing black flowers floating in the air, and diplopia (seeing objects as double). Also treats internal cataracts, where the Shen Shui appears pale green or pale white. Additionally used for treating tinnitus and deafness.
Ci Shi (Magnetitum, Magnetite) 2 liang, Chen Sha (Cinnabaris, Cinnabar) 1 liang, Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata, Fermented Mass) 3 liang (raw). Mix Shen Qu with 1 liang of water to form a cake, boil until it floats, then add the aforementioned herbs. Process with refined honey to make pills. Take 10 pills per dose, increasing up to 30 pills, taken on an empty stomach with rice soup.
[Collected Annotations] Wang Youyuan stated: The essence of the five zang organs and six fu organs all ascend to the eyes; thus, the ability of the eyes to see relies on Qi, while the reason they can see depends on Essence. The Kidney stores Essence, therefore Shen Shui originates from the Kidney. The Heart is like the Li trigram shining light, therefore Shen Guang (Divine Light) originates from the Heart. Shen Guang arises from Yang and reflects outward; guarded by Yin Essence, it does not disperse but remains constantly bright. Shen Shui arises from Yin and is condensed and quiet; distributed by Yang Qi, it sees clearly without limit. Only when the Heart and Kidney are deficient does Shen Shui become dry and Shen Guang scarce, causing various conditions such as dimness, blindness, and internal cataracts. Ci Shi directly enters the Kidney meridian, gathering scattered Shen (Spirit); its nature attracts iron, absorbing the Qi of Lung Metal to store in Kidney Water. Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, Cinnabar) has a Yang body but Yin nature, capable of subduing floating fire and calming the Shen Ming (Spiritual Brightness). Water acts as a mirror, Fire acts as a candle; when Water and Fire mutually assist, their brilliance will not scatter! However, the eyes receive the essence of the zang-fu organs; essence is supplemented by grains. Shen Qu can digest the five grains, thus making essence easier to form. Generally, when Shen Shui is dilated, if left slowly it cannot be retrieved; relying on heavy, sedating substances allows for rapid contraction and attraction, hence this is an emergency remedy. Its treatment of tinnitus and deafness also relies on the power of sedation to treat deficiency-Yang rushing into the ears. Ke Qin stated: This pill is a holy remedy for treating mania and dementia. Mania and dementia are diseases of the Heart, Kidney, and Spleen. The Heart stores Shen, the Spleen stores Yi (Intellect) and Zhi (Wisdom), and the Kidney stores Jing (Essence) and Zhi (Will). The Heart is the master of Shen Ming; if the master is unclear, the twelve officials are endangered, the channels become blocked and unconnected, and the form suffers greatly—this is what is meant. But why is the master unclear? The Heart follows the Li trigram and belongs to Fire, with True Water hidden within. If the True Water of Tian Yi (One Heaven) is insufficient, the empty fire of Di Er (Two Earth) runs wild. What is called "Heavenly Qi" becomes blocked, and "Earthly Qi" obscures brightness; the sun and moon lose their clarity, evil qi harms the orifices, so the eyes often see hallucinations and produce this strange disease. Without heavy agents of metals and stones to sedate it, mania will certainly not cease. Zhu Sha inherits the red color of the South, connects internally with the Heart, and can descend rootless fire to calm Shen Ming. Ci Shi inherits the black color of the North, connects internally with the Kidney, absorbs Lung Metal Qi to generate Essence, and weighs down flaming-upward fire to stabilize Will. These two stone materials are heavy and govern descent; their nature is cold and cools Yin. They share similar aspirations and achieve merit readily. Shen Qu pushes out the old and brings forth the new, communicating upward with Heart Shen and downward with Kidney Zhi to generate Yi and Zhi. Moreover, food enters to nourish Yin and grows Yang; depriving the patient of food cures the condition—this is the method for treating mania in the *Nei Jing*. Once food is digested, Yi and Zhi become clear and Spirit is regulated; this is the purpose of using Shen Qu! Refined honey is used to harmonize and make pills, which is another way of using sweetness to moderate tension.
