[Prescription Verse] For mild cases of carbuncles and sores at the seven-day mark, the Divine Lamp Illumination Method is most appropriate. If pus has not yet formed, it may resolve spontaneously; if already formed, it will quickly ulcerate. The immediate sloughing of necrotic tissue is truly miraculous. Soaked burning sticks are used to illuminate around the lesion. Initially use three sticks, gradually increasing the number. Apply medicine to the back of the head and paste it on the affected area. If pus is present, wash with decoction without delay.
[Annotation] For mild cases of carbuncles and sores, within the first week after onset, the Divine Lamp Illumination Method (Shen Deng Zhao Fa) is most suitable. It can cause lesions that have not yet suppurated to resolve spontaneously, and those that have suppurated to ulcerate spontaneously. Lesions that fail to rise will then rise, and those that fail to slough will then slough, demonstrating remarkable efficacy. The "Divine Lamp" (a medicated paper stick) is soaked thoroughly in sesame oil, ignited, and held about half an inch away from the sore. Illuminate slowly around the lesion from outside to inside, with the flame pointing upward. The medicinal vapor enters the interior, and the toxic qi disperses with the fire, preventing internal invasion of the Zang-Fu organs. Start with three sticks, gradually increasing to four or five. Continue illumination as the lesion subsides. Immediately after illumination, apply a surrounding dressing to the base of the sore, extending two to three fen beyond the erythema. Cover the wound opening with Wanying Gao (Universal Ointment). If dry or purulent, rinse with Pig Trotter Decoction (Zhuti Tang). If already ulcerated with profuse discharge, this illumination method is unnecessary.
Method: Divine Lamp Illumination Formula
Composition: Cinnabar (Zhu Sha), Realgar (Xiong Huang), Dragon's Blood (Xuexie), Myrrh (Moyao) (each 2 qian), Musk (Shexiang) (4 fen).
Grind all into a fine powder. Use 3 fen per application. Wrap the powder in red cotton paper, roll into a stick 7 cun long, soak thoroughly in sesame oil, and set aside for use.
[Prescription Verse] The Divine Lamp Illumination Method acts swiftly and urgently; Musk, Myrrh, Realgar, Cinnabar, and Dragon's Blood are suitable. Ground into powder, wrapped in paper, moistened with sesame oil, ignited to fumigate the sore, driving away fire-toxin.
[Prescription Verse] Carbuncles and sores initially present with swelling and pain, feeling heavy as if carrying a stone, hard without suppuration. The Mulberry Fire Roasting Method (Sang Chai Hong Fa) can detoxify, stop pain, reduce swelling, and eliminate edema with miraculous efficacy. Split new mulberry tree roots into strips; branches should be slightly over 9 cun long. Split to the thickness of a finger. Ignite one end, blow out the open flame, and roast the affected area with the residual heat. Replace when the fire burns out. Use three to four branches per session for effectiveness. Roast two to three times daily until swelling subsides, suppuration occurs, necrotic tissue sloughs off, and new flesh grows.
[Annotation] For initial carbuncles and sores presenting with swelling, pain, heaviness like carrying a stone, hardness, and lack of suppuration, roasting with mulberry wood can detoxify, relieve pain, reduce swelling, dissipate blood stasis, and allow toxic fluids to drain, leading to internal resolution. If already ulcerated but failing to slough, with no new flesh growth and persistent pain, this method aids Yang Qi, dissipates stasis and toxin, promotes muscle regeneration, and moves the pathology from deep to superficial, showing remarkable results. The method uses new mulberry root split into strips, or mulberry branches 9 cun long, split to finger thickness. Ignite one end, blow out the flame, and roast the lesion until warm, replacing when exhausted. Use three to four branches per session, twice or thrice daily, stopping when warmth is felt, swelling subsides, suppuration occurs, and tissue sloughs. This is an ancient method. However, mulberry fire is intense and is best used before ulceration to generate Yang Qi and accelerate suppuration and sloughing. After ulceration, if the wound feels cold, weather is cold, or flesh growth is delayed, roasting is also necessary to keep the tissue warm. Burn mulberry wood to red charcoal, place in a perforated ladle, suspend above the lesion, and roast the wound margins from all sides, adjusting height based on perceived warmth. Change dressings after each daily session. Since flesh regenerates better with warmth, post-ulceration roasting is indispensable in surgery.
