Sanhe San (Three-Combination Powder)
12. Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction), which supports the spleen and benefits the stomach, promotes the transformation of food into essence and qi, strengthening blood and qi. It improves appetite and gradually refreshes the spirit, serving as an excellent formula to harmonize Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) and Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood). Combining Bazhen Tang (Eight-Treasure Decoction) with Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Blue-Green Decoction) after removing Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), the efficacy is extraordinary when modified according to symptoms. After the pathogen recedes and deficiency emaciation remains, tonify blood and qi using Bazhen Tang or Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction), etc., as Yangrong formulas.
[Note] The treatment principle for Chulao (postpartum consumptive disease) should first focus on supporting the spleen and benefiting the stomach, preferably using Liujunzi Tang with modifications. Strengthening the spleen and stomach enables proper digestion and intake, allowing postnatal water and grain qi to transform into essence, naturally making blood and qi robust and spirit refreshed. Subsequently, regulate Wei Qi and harmonize Ying Blood, preferably using Sanhe San, which consists of Bazi Tang minus Baizhu combined with Xiaochaihu Tang, containing Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Modify according to symptoms: if there are alternating chills and fever, and distending pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, remove Renshen, Huangqin, and Dihuang; add Yanyu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Taoren (Persicae Semen); if there is poor appetite, somnolence, and dizziness, remove Chaihu; add Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Suosha (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium); if there is steaming bone sensation, night sweats, or spontaneous sweating, remove Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Chaihu; add Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Digupi (Bark of Ground Tree Bark), and Muli (Ostreae Concha); if there is phlegm-panting and coughing, remove Renshen and Chaihu; add Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Chuanbeimu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus), and Baihe (Lilii Bulbus); if there is sallow complexion, emaciation, and fatigue, remove Chaihu and Chuanxiong; add Huangqi and double the dosage of Renshen. Adjust clinically based on judgment. If all symptoms have resolved after taking the medicine but only deficiency emaciation remains, use Bazhen Tang, Shiquan Dabu Tang, or Yangrong Tang to nourish and tonify.
Liujunzi Tang, Bazi Tang, Shiquan Dabu Tang, and Yiqi Yangrong Tang formulas are all found in the first volume.
Jiawei Shiquan Dabu Tang (Modified Ten Significant Tonifying Decoction), Jiawei Xiaoyao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder)
13. Postpartum blood loss followed by Binglou (uterine bleeding), where blood depletion leads to qi sinking, is a serious condition. Use Shiquan Dabu Tang plus Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Shanyuzi (Corni Fructus), and Paojiangtan (Charred Ginger) to address it. If caused by sudden anger injuring liver qi, use Xiaoyao San plus Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), and Baimaogen (Imperatae Rhizoma). If stasis stagnates in the lower abdomen causing frequent distending pain, Foshou San (Hand Buddha Powder) and Shixiao San (Laughing Off Powder) are effective as divine remedies.
[Note] After parturition, yin blood has already been depleted; contracting Binglou indicates blood depletion and qi sinking, which is not a mild condition. Severe tonification is required. Use Shiquan Dabu Tang added with Ejiao, Shengma, Xuduan, Zaoren, Shanyuzi, and Paojiangtan to lift and tonify the sinking qi. If caused by sudden anger injuring liver blood leading to reckless movement, use Xiaoyao San added with Heizhi (Charred Gardeniae Fructus), Dihuang, and Baimaogen to clear heat. If there is internal stagnant stasis, there will likely be lower abdominal distending pain; use Foshou San and Shixiao San to tonify while expelling stasis.
Shiquan Dabu Tang, Xiaoyao San, Foshou San, and Shixiao San formulas are all found in the first volume.
