The *Chan Jing* (Classic of Childbirth) states: The method for an infant's first clothing: For a child born on Jia or Yi days, wear black clothes (avoid Geng days, dusk hours, and Bu hours; these are inauspicious). For a child born on Bing or Ding days, wear cyan/green clothes (avoid midnight). For a child born on Wu or Ji days, wear crimson/dark red clothes (avoid Jia-Shen days and morning hours; these are inauspicious). For a child born on Geng or Xin days, wear yellow clothes (avoid Bing-Zi days and Shen hours; these are inauspicious). For a child born on Ren or Gui days, wear white clothes (avoid Wu or Ji days and dusk hours; these are inauspicious).
It also states: For an infant's first clothing, choose auspicious days and times, specifically the Si hour. Using "Jia" for boys and "Yi" for girls is auspicious.
It also states: When making infant clothes, do not use new silk wadding or silk, as this damages the child's Qi (vital energy); therefore, old cloth and silk should be used. Because old garments possess "human Qi" (adapted to human body atmosphere), wearing them is more beneficial. Infant clothes should not be too thick; excessive wadding should be avoided. One should maintain a thinness such that one feels reluctant to see the child cold; this is ideal.
The *Li Ji* (Book of Rites) states: Children do not wear fur robes. (Fur robes are too warm, consuming Yin Qi, causing discomfort; avoiding fur robes is for convenience and appropriateness.)
The *Yangsheng Yaoji* (Essential Collection for Health Preservation) states: When an infant is born, wearing new silk wadding leads to bone-steaming fever (a symptom of Yin deficiency with heat); eating fish and meat leads to the generation of parasites; indulging in leisure and pleasure makes the body susceptible to injury.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: When an infant is just born, the skin and muscles are not yet formed. They should not be kept warm with heavy clothing, as this causes tendons and bones to become loose and weak. If they do not see sunlight and wind, their skin and muscles become brittle and soft, making them easily injured. Old cotton wadding should be used for clothing, not new silk wadding. When the weather is mild without wind and cold, the mother should play with the child in the sunlight. Frequent exposure to wind and sun will make the blood and Qi strong, and muscles firm and dense, enabling tolerance to wind and cold and preventing disease. If always hidden in curtains, wrapped in heavy warm clothes, and avoiding cool grassy areas without seeing wind or sun, the child becomes soft and fragile, unable to withstand wind and cold.
It also states: In raising infants, one must be cautious against fright, avoiding loud noises. When holding the child, movements should be gentle and slow, avoiding frightening the child.
It also states: In case of thunder, create other subtle sounds to mask it.
It also states: Infants should not bathe in winter, as bathing in winter causes Cold Damage (Shanghan); infants should not bathe in summer, as prolonged lack of bathing leads to heat injury.
It also states: For infants who cannot nurse properly, one should administer Shuang Wan (Double Pill, a purgative formula). If an infant has excess Qi and illness, purging will cause no harm; if not purged in time, it becomes a chronic disease, difficult to treat.
The *Bingyuan Lun* (Treatise on Pathogenesis and Symptoms) states: The method of wearing thin clothes: One should start practicing from autumn. Do not suddenly reduce clothing in spring and summer, as this causes internal cold. Gradual practice starting from autumn, even if feeling cold initially, ensures that by winter, only two layers of thin padded trousers and one layer of lined skirt are needed. One should always maintain a state where one feels reluctant to see the child cold; this is appropriate. Over-love leading to overheating harms the child.
It also states: One should monitor and adjust so that the child does not sweat. Sweating leads to deficiency and damage, making the child susceptible to wind and cold. This caution applies day and night, whether awake or asleep.
The *Chan Jing* states: The general method for raising infants is to follow the temperature of the adults' bodies and adjust according to seasonal changes, observing the subtleties.
It also states: New silk and cloth should not be used because their excessive warmth harms infants.
If an infant wears clothes that are too thin, milk and food in the abdomen will not digest. Undigested milk and food result in sour-smelling stools. Sour smell indicates the early stage of Pi accumulation (abdominal masses). Use Shuang Wan to mildly resolve it.
If an infant's stool is yellow and foul-smelling, this indicates heat in the abdomen. Longgu Tang (Dragon Bone Decoction) is suitable and effective.
If an infant nurses irregularly, illness is likely. Purging after illness damages Stomach Qi, causing abdominal distension. Purging two or three times is acceptable, but exceeding this harms the infant.
Purging in winter is generally safe; purging in summer that fails to improve is difficult to treat. For robust infants with illness, purging is necessary. After purging in summer, slight abdominal distension may occur; nursing should be regulated and care provided, leading to recovery within a few days.
Infants should not urinate on ash from cooking stoves, as this causes sores on the genitals, which are difficult to treat.
