The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: Due to the expenditure of Qi during childbirth, the Bladder is damaged, allowing cold Qi to enter the Bao Luo (uterus/bladder sac). The Bao Luo ruptures and leaks, failing to control urination; thus, urinary incontinence is mostly caused by difficult labor.
The *Duan Ju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) provides a formula for treating postpartum enuresis with unknown timing:
Baiwei (Radix Cynanchi Atrati, 2 fen) Xiyao (Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae, 2 fen)
These two herbs are crushed, sifted, and taken with wine as one fangcun bi (a measure approx. 1 cubic inch), three times daily.
Another formula: Take the grass from the nest of the swallow (*Huyan*), burn it to ash, and take half a qianbi (a small spoon measure) with water or wine. It is also effective for men.
Yet another formula: Take equal parts of Fanshi (Alumen) and Muli (Ostrea Shell), grind finely and sift, and take with wine as one fangcun bi, three times daily.
The *Chan Jing* (Classic of Childbirth): Formula for treating postpartum enuresis:
Longgu (Fossilized Bones) powder, taken with wine as one fangcun bi, three times daily.
Another formula: Xiyao (Radix Paeoniae Lactiflorae) powder, taken with wine as one fangcun bi, twice daily and once at night.
The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: Due to postpartum deficiency and damage, heat pathogens lodge within the Bao Luo. Deficiency causes frequent urination, while heat causes scanty urine, resulting in Lin syndrome (dysuria).
The *Zimu Milu* (Secret Record of Mother and Child) states: Formula for postpartum Lin syndrome:
Huashi (Talcum, 5 fen) Tongcao (Medicinal Tetrapanacis Medulla) Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) Kuizi (Malvae Semen, 4 fen each)
These four herbs are crushed, sifted, and taken with vinegar slurry as one fangcun bi.
The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: Childbirth damages blood and Qi, which become deficient and夹杂 (mixed with) heat. Heat clashes with blood, causing blood to scatter and渗 (seep) into the Bao Luo due to heat; thus, blood exits with urine, constituting hematuria.
The *Chan Jing* states: For postpartum hematuria that is not fully expelled, after having taken Puxiao Decoction, this Huyang San (Polygoni Multiflori Folium Powder) is suitable:
Puhuang (Pollinis Typhae, 1 sheng) Shengjiye (Fresh Leaves of Thistle, dried and powdered, 2 sheng)
These two herbs are ground, sifted, and taken with wine as one fangcun bi, three times daily.
The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: If postpartum deficiency has not recovered and one rises early, wind-cold invades. Wind-cold enters the Large Intestine through the deficiency; intestinal weakness leads to diarrhea, causing dysentery. Postpartum dysentery, if transforming into bloody dysentery, is difficult to treat.
The *Chan Jing* states: Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) is indicated:
Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang each)
Boil in 6 sheng of water until 3 sheng remain, divide into three doses.
Another formula: Each herb 1 liang, 3 sheng of water, boil until 1.5 sheng remain, divide into two doses.
The *Ji Yao Fang* (Essential Formulas) states: Formulas for various types of postpartum dysentery:
It is advisable to cook and eat Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus); the more, the better. (Note: The *Zimu Milu* states this is Xu Renze's formula.)
The *Yi Men Fang* (Medical Gate Formulas) treats postpartum dysentery that does not stop, accompanied by exhaustion and impending Qi collapse, regardless of whether it is bloody, white, or undigested food:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) Houpo (Magnolia Bark, 3 liang each) Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex, 2 liang each)
Boil in 6 sheng of water until 2 sheng remain, remove dregs, divide into two doses.
The *Zimu Milu* states: A formula for postpartum dysentery that is effective for all conditions:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 sheng) Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Flesh, 3 liang, broken) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 2 liang)
These three herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into honey pills the size of wutong seeds (mulberry seeds). Take 20 pills per dose.
