The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: When the intestines and stomach are weak, wind-pathogen carrying heat invades the body. Since the intestines are empty, diarrhea ensues; thus it is called "heat dysentery" (Re Li). The stool color is yellow; if the heat is severe, the yellow becomes darker.
The Qingyao Jiechang Wan (Green Essential Intestine-Coagulating Pill) from the *Lu Yan Fang* (Recorded Verified Prescriptions) treats persistent lower leakage caused by heat-toxin, regardless of whether the condition is new or chronic:
Sophorae Radix (Kushen), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi), Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao, prepared by roasting), Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Duhuo), Paeoniae Radix (Shiyao), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Indigo Naturalis (Lanqing; in another version, Zingiberis Rhizoma干燥 [Ganjiang] 4 fen replaces this), Daphnes Cortex (Guijiu), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao; text missing here).
These ten ingredients are together pounded and sifted. Honey is melted and mixed with Ejiao to bind the powder into pills the size of a Chinese quince seed (Wuzi). Taken orally with water on an empty stomach, ten pills per dose, three times daily. If the effect is insufficient, the dosage may be slightly increased.
The Wumei Tang (Mume Decoction) from the *Jing Xin Fang* treats lower leakage due to heat-toxin accompanied by dampness:
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 2 liang), Fructus Mume (Wumei, 30 pieces), Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao, 1 liang), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 30 seeds), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 1 liang).
These five herbs are boiled in 5 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng, divided into two doses for administration.
The Xin Lu Fang prescription for treating heat dysentery:
Dried dates (Gan Zao), 40 pieces, boiled in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1 sheng, taken in one dose.
Another prescription: Fermented soybean (Chi), 2 sheng, boiled in 3 sheng of water until reduced to 1.5 sheng, divided into two doses.
The Huanglian Wan (Coptis Pill) from the *Qipo Fang* treats lower leakage caused by middle-jiao heat excess:
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 12 fen), Zingiberis Rhizoma (Ganjiang, 8 fen), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 8 fen).
These three herbs are pounded and sifted, then bound with honey into pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take two pills per dose; increase dosage if necessary.
The *Ge Shi Fang*: For yellow-colored stools, indicating lower leakage with toxic heat, the treatment prescription is:
Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), 14 pieces, skin removed, pounded, and bound with honey into pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take three pills per dose.
Furthermore, cases with heat-pathogen often present with discharge of red pus or blood mixed with stool. The treatment prescription is:
Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), soot from the kitchen chimney (Zao Tu Zhong Chenmo), taken orally with wine, two fangcun bi (measure for powder) per dose, three times daily.
Another prescription: A handful of Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xie), cooked with crucian carp, added with broomcorn millet (Shumi) and eaten; this yields good results.
The *Qianjin Fang* prescription for chronic dysentery where various heat-treatment methods have failed:
Flesh of Fructus Mume (Wumei Rou), 1 sheng, roasted; Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), 1 jin, selecting those with golden color.
These two ingredients are bound with honey into pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take twenty pills per dose, three times daily and once at night; this is highly effective. The *Seng Shen Fang* agrees with this.
The *Guang Ji Fang* prescription for severe heat-toxin dysentery characterized by frequent urges but small volume of stool, and stabbing pain in the abdomen:
Powdered Cornu Rinocerotis (Sheng Xijiao), 3 liang; Pericarpium Granati (Suan Shiliu Pi), 3 liang, roasted; Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao), 3 liang, roasted.
Pounded into a powder, taken orally with water, two fangcun bi per dose, twice daily. Avoid hot foods.
