According to *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases): When a person sleeps, their Hun and Po souls wander outside. If suppressed by demonic influences (Yan), their spirit is constrained. Those with weak constitutions may remain unconscious for a long time after being Yan, potentially leading to sudden cessation of Qi (vital energy).
*Ji Yan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) method for treating sudden Yan approaching death:
Crush fresh Chinese chives (*Allium tuberosum*, Jiucai) to extract juice and instill it into the nostrils; in severe cases, instill into both ears as well.
*Xu Bo Fang* method for treating Yan where calling does not awaken the patient:
Use a scallion leaf (*Cong Ye*) to prick the nose. Do not use fire light.
*Ge Shi Fang* states: When Yan occurs during sleep and the patient does not wake, do not illuminate with fire, as this may cause death. Instead, bite firmly at the heel and the edge of the big toenail, and spit frequently onto the face.
Powdered Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zaojia, 皂荚) should be blown into both nostrils using a tube, which will cause immediate awakening. This can still be effective even if three or four days have passed.
Another prescription: Powder the yellow earth from the hearth (Fulonggan, 伏龙肝) and blow it into both nostrils.
Another prescription: Crush Chinese chives (*Allium tuberosum*, Jiucai) and blow the juice into the nostrils. In winter, dig up the roots and squeeze out the juice.
Another prescription: Use a brush hair to prick the nostril—left for males, right for females—and gently rotate it inward.
Another prescription: Have an ox or horse stand near the head of the Yan victim for two hundred breaths; a green ox is particularly effective.
Another prescription: Blow powdered Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shichangpu, 石菖蒲) into the nose, and place powdered Ramulus Cinnamomi (Guizhi, 桂枝) under the tongue.
Another prescription: Have one person sit at the head of the patient, while another calls the patient's name from outside the door. The person sitting at the head should answer "Yes" (Nuo), and the patient will then recover. (Current commentary refers to *Jiuji...*)
It also says: For those prone to Yan and bad dreams:
Place one grain of real Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) beside the pillow.
Another prescription: Wear Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄); left side for males, right side for females.
Another prescription: It is good to make a pillow from Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao, 犀角).
Another prescription: Use a tiger's head as a pillow.
Another prescription: Place Aquilaria sinensis wood (Qingmuxiang, 青木香) inside the pillow and carry it with you.
*Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) method for treating Yan not waking:
Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) the size of a jujube, tied under the left armpit, prevents Yan for life. (*Ji Yan Fang* agrees with this.)
Another prescription: Powdered Fulonggan (Hearth Earth) blown into the nose.
*Yang Xing Zhi* (Records of Nourishing Life) states: Do not call a Yan victim by lighting a fire, or death is certain. Call them secretly for good fortune. Call from afar, do not approach and call urgently.
*Jiuji Danyan Fang* (Emergency Single Proven Prescriptions) method for treating Yan death:
Lead an ox close to the nose; the person revives shortly.
Another prescription: Bite the edge of the big toenail; the person revives.
*Fan Wang Fang* talismanic method for treating Yan death, applicable if Yan death has just occurred so revival is possible:
Write this talisman, burn it until black, mix with a little water, place in the mouth of the dead, hang a mirror before the ear of the deceased, strike the mirror while calling the dead, and they will revive within half a day.
Write "KT KT" with cinnabar (Dansha, 丹砂).
*Xin Lu Fang* method if Yan does not awaken:
Swallow a pinch of ash from burnt hair with wine.
Another prescription: Crush the rhizome and stem of *Dioscorea nipponica* (Suoduo, 蒴藋), take one sheng (approx. 200ml) of the juice and ingest it.
