The *Chan Jing* (Classic of Childbirth) states: If a newborn's body is curled and cannot extend, the child will die. If a newborn's anus opens like a fish's mouth, the child will die; if there is no flesh between the thighs at birth, the child will die; if the skull is fractured at birth, the child will die; if the genitals do not erect at birth, the child will die; if the scrotum is white but the orifice is red at birth, the child will die; if the hair distribution is uneven, the child is malformed; if the head splits open into four parts at birth, the child is also malformed; if the cry is scattered and weak at birth, the child is also malformed.
Any newborn exhibiting these various signs will not survive to adulthood.
If a male infant is born lying on his back, it is unfavorable for the wife; if a female infant is born lying on her stomach, it is unfavorable for the husband.
Those born on the Jian day are called Children of the Big Dipper. For both males and females, rising from bed is inadvisable, as it may lead to self-destruction.
The *Chan Jing* explains: When giving birth to a boy, observe the direction of the Sun; when giving birth to a girl, observe the direction of Chen (the Dragon hour/star). If auspicious positions are obtained, divine protection is good. If Wang (King) or Xiang (Minister) Qi stands firm, without mutual destruction throughout, and the Shen (Deity) above Tai Sui (Grand Duke Jupiter) generates with the Day and Chen, the child will live long and be auspicious. If they do not generate each other, let nature take its course. If inauspicious signs appear, trapping the Jiang Shen (General Deity), and Qi clashes mutually above and below, the child will not live long. If encountering Bai Hu (White Tiger), the child dies upon birth. If encountering Zhu Que (Vermilion Bird), the child will suffer from illness; if encountering Teng She (Flying Snake), the mother will be startled.
Another version states: Usually, placing Tian Kui (Heavenly Key) above the Zi (Rat) natal palace, and Tai Yi (Supreme One) below Kui, constitutes "Tian Sha" (Heavenly Killing). In heaven, it is Tian Sha; on earth, it is Yue Sha (Monthly Killing). Giving birth below leads to death by ghost officials. Giving birth under Yue Sha leads to harm by treacherous subjects.
Another version states: If the Zhi Yong Shen (Directly Used Deity) encounters Qing Long (Azure Dragon) or Tai Chang (Great Constancy), the family will be wealthy. If it encounters Tai Yin (Great Moon), it can only preserve the household. If it encounters Liu He (Six Harmonies), there will be frequent rewards and joy. If it encounters Zhu Que (Vermilion Bird), there will be frequent legal troubles. If it encounters Gou Chen (Hooked Earth), there will be frequent disputes and arguments. If it encounters Xuan Wu (Dark Warrior), there will be frequent thefts. If it encounters Teng She (Flying Snake), one will see fear and dread, with a personality prone to sorrow and worry. If it encounters Tian Kong (Heavenly Emptiness), the personality will be deceitful and absurd. If it encounters Bai Hu (White Tiger), the person will not live long.
The *Chan Jing* cites the classic text: During times when the lowly oppress the noble, if a boy is born, he hinders the father; if a girl is born, she hinders the mother. They lose their ancestors and become orphans.
Another version states: It is undesirable for the child's birth time to clash with the Day and Chen pillars. If the Day and Chen are clashed, it is extremely inauspicious. Distinguishing this way is the essential secret.
Another version states: The *Long Hua Jing* (Dragon Flower Classic) says: One must record the day of the initial marriage. If the marriage day is Jia/Yi (Wood), and the child is born on Geng/Xin (Metal) days, it is extremely inauspicious. The Heavenly Stems harm the father, and the Earthly Branches harm the mother. If both clash with the Day and Chen, both are harmed.
Another version states: For any child born on a Yue Sha (Monthly Killing) day, regardless of gender, it hinders the parents, and the child is inauspicious. Yue Sha refers to Chou, Xu, Wei, and Chen, cycling repeatedly.
Another version states: Placing Shen Hou (God's Rear) over the child's birth hour, and Kui Star over the parents' natal year, will harm both parents.
