Su Jing discussed: Generally, Hongxiangjiao (Gouty Arthritis/Chronic Lower Limb Edema) tends to manifest in late spring and early summer. Manifestations in spring are mild, those in summer are heavier, they lighten slightly after entering autumn, and cease naturally in winter.
This is the general rule, though occasionally there are exceptions to this pattern.
He also stated: There are three types of pulses for Hongxiangjiao: a slow pulse indicates mildness, a deep and tight pulse is intermediate, and a flooding and rapid pulse is severe. Those with a deep and tight pulse often die; those with a flooding and rapid pulse survive; those with a slow pulse heal spontaneously without treatment.
He also stated: There are cases where there is no swelling but the pulse is slow and weak, sudden falling while walking, gradually progressing to numbness, and death occurs when toxic qi attacks the heart from below. It happens so quickly there is no time to turn around, merely delaying death by months.
Tang Lin discussed: This disease causes fullness in the hypochondrium and upward rushing of qi, which can be fatal. Acute cases may kill within half a day; chronic cases may take one or two months. Upon first contracting this disease, it is best to treat it immediately and swiftly, without hesitation.
Xu Sigong discussed: All Hongxiangjiao has yin and yang aspects. If both feet and thighs [sound like "bang"] become swollen and painful, pressing feels as if hitting bone, bone pain and... able to walk, not...
The *Qianjin Fang* states: Whenever one senses even slight abnormalities in symptoms, one must feel extreme alarm and resolve to treat it urgently. If damage allows slow qi to rush into the abdomen, whether swollen or not, it stops...
The *Duanju Fang* states: A floating and large pulse indicates the disease is in the exterior; a deep and fine pulse indicates the disease is in the interior; a floating, large, tight, and rapid pulse is the most malignant among the three grades of pulses.
The *Ge Shi Fang* states: Weakness in the legs, fullness and bi-syndrome extending to the lower abdomen, difficult urination, and upward rushing of qi lead to death.
Tang Lin discussed: The method for managing Hongxiangjiao conservatively, following these guidelines for regulation, will surely restore qi health. First, avoid anger; anger causes vexation in the heart and abdomen, and heart-abdominal vexation triggers the onset of Hongxiangjiao... the calves especially... recuperation... rhinoceros horn... seven times... top of head slightly similar... recovery. If... wash it...
Su Jing discussed: Patients with Hongxiangjiao cannot achieve permanent cure; they inevitably relapse in spring and summer. In summer, when the couli (pores/skin texture) are open, one should not sleep; sleeping causes... body... exacerbates floating...
