Each of the above ingredients is placed according to its direction and held in a porcelain dish. On the first day of the fifth lunar month, they are devoutly placed before the household deity altar. By noon on the fifth day,
they are ground together into powder. The powder is formed into pills using the corner pieces of zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) from five different families, with the size of a tung tree seed. After drying in the shade, they are stored for use. Whenever encountering a person suffering from malaria (Nue Ji), on the morning of the malaria attack, wrap the pill in cotton and insert it into the nostril; males use the left nostril, females use the right.
Malaria where symptoms are similar among people of all ages within a year is called Yi Nue (Epidemic Malaria). This method is primarily effective and miraculous.
"Epidemic" refers to the abnormal qi of heaven and earth, which corresponds to the winning and retaliating qi changes of the six positions. The vomit or breath of birds and insects contains toxic qi. When this great atmospheric qi arrives, no one is entirely unaffected; however, those who are strong, at leisure, and staying indoors do not fall ill. Those who are weak, overworked, or outdoors encounter it, and this formless qi enters through the nose, hiding between the muscle layers, contending with the healthy qi, thus forming malaria. This prescription aligns positions with the Five Directions, herbs with the Five Colors, qi with the Five Qi, flavors with the Five Flavors, months with the Fifth Month, days with the Fifth Day, and uses zongzi from five families. This reflects medical knowledge combined with insights from Yin-Yang schools. Therefore, if the malaria pathogen enters the Liver, the cooling nature of Qingdai can clear the Liver, and the musky odor of Shexiang allows direct penetration; if the pathogen enters the Lung, the acrid nature of Baizhi can drain the Lung, and the fishy smell of Alumen can clear dryness; if the pathogen affects the Heart, the heavy settling property of Cinnabar can calm the Heart, and the scorched flavor of Guigui can benefit Fire; if the pathogen affects the Kidney, the sweet and salty nature of Heidou can benefit the Kidney, and the putrid nature of Badou can drain pathogens; if the pathogen affects the Spleen, the warming nature of Sulfur can establish the Middle Jiao, and the fierce nature of Realgar can dispel filth. Since epidemic qi is formless and enters through the nose, treatment is also administered via nasal insertion. Plugging one nostril while leaving the other open follows the principle of "leaving an escape route when surrounding an army." The preparation period is set in the fifth month because the disease originates from abnormal Yin-Yang qi, so it is countered using Yin-Yang principles. The number "five" refers to the numerical sequence of Jia and Ji in the Central Palace, symbolizing governance facing south. Although various qi changes differ in winning/retaliating or excessive/restraining patterns, they all face north as subjects, adhering to the way of maintaining position and obeying orders. Thus, the preparation consistently utilizes the number five.
