The seventh condition: Great anger and fear injure the *Zhi* (Will, associated with the Kidney). When the *Zhi* is injured, one experiences mental confusion and lack of joy; this formula should be used to treat it.
Anger causes Qi to ascend upward, while fear causes Qi to sink downward. Whether due to anger or fear, the Qi becomes obstructed in the *Shanzhong* (Chest center, located between the nipples, corresponding to the Pericardium), preventing the free flow of the Will and Intent, hence termed "injuring the *Zhi*." The *Zhi* is governed by the Kidney but flows through the *Shanzhong*. The *Shanzhong* is located between the two breasts and represents the domain of the Heart Emperor. The Heart is the source of Spirit (*Shen*), thus causing mental confusion; the *Shanzhong* is the source of Joy, thus causing a lack of happiness. For Qi that has sunk, we raise it; for Qi that is depressed, we disperse it. Therefore, we use herbs with ascending properties such as Qianghuo, Duhuo, Fangfeng, and Chaihu. If Qi becomes disordered in the middle Jiao, affecting the Spleen and Stomach, we use herbs to regulate the Stomach, such as Renshen, Huangqin, Fuling, Baizhu, Chenpi, Banxia, Gancao, and Baishao. The inclusion of Zexie allows for the draining of pathogens that have sunk downward. The inclusion of Huanglian helps to calm the rebellious Qi in the *Shanzhong*.
Cishi (Magnetitum) (Heat until red-hot in fire, quench in vinegar seven times, grind into powder and add to the decoction).
Ancients frequently used Cishi in formulas for Kidney deficiency causing lower back pain, but contemporary prescriptions often omit it. However, since Cishi has the property of attracting iron, its use is intended to borrow its ability to guide Lung Metal Qi into the Kidney, facilitating the mutual generation of mother and child elements (Metal generates Water). When Water is clarified by Metal, the Ministerial Fire (Xianghuo) will recede without direct attack. Alas! The subtlety of medicine lies in its profound mysteries; these words can only be shared with those who understand.
Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) (8 liang), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) (each 4 liang), BaiFuling (Poria, peeled), Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (each 3 liang).
For cases where Kidney deficiency fails to control Ministerial Fire, this formula is indicated.
The Kidney governs not only Water but also contains the Fire of the Gate of Vitality (Mingmen). If the Kidney is not deficient, Kidney Water is sufficient to control the Fire; if deficient, the Fire lacks control, leading to heat syndromes. This is named "Yin Deficiency with Hyperactive Fire." This corresponds to Hejian's statement that "Kidney deficiency leads to heat." Currently, symptoms such as heat in the soles of the feet, heat in the medial thighs, and pain in the lower back and spine are largely attributed to this syndrome. In the elderly, this presents as a favorable prognosis; in the young, it is unfavorable and may precede hemoptysis. Shudihuang and Shanzhuyu possess strong flavors. The Classics state: "Strong flavors belong to Yin within Yin," thus they can nourish Shaoyin (Kidney) and tonify Kidney Water. Zexie is sweet, salty, and cold. Sweet transforms via dampness, salty transforms via water, and cold transforms via Yin; therefore, it enters the Water Organ (Kidney) to drain the Fire within the Water. Mudanpi is cold in nature with bitter and acrid flavors. Cold overcomes heat, bitter enters the Blood level, and acrid generates Water; thus, it benefits Shaoyin and calms deficient heat. Shanyao and Fuling are sweet. Sweet transforms via Earth, and Earth controls Water overflow; therefore, they are used to restrain pathogens in the Water Organ and benefit the Spleen and Stomach to cultivate the Mother of All Things (the Postnatal Foundation).
