Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, cleaned and stir-fried) Licorice Root (Gancao) Fresh Ginger Shengjiang (each 3 liang) Red Peony Root Shaoyao (6 liang) Jujube Zao (12 pieces) Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma Dahuang (1 liang)
For severe abdominal pain caused by disharmony of cold and heat, this formula is indicated.
"Disharmony of cold and heat with severe pain" refers to conditions where consuming hot food followed by cold food leads to incompatibility, resulting in severe pain. In this formula, Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) can disperse true cold; Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) can purge excess heat; Red Peony Root (Shaoyao) can strengthen the Spleen and harmonize the Liver; Licorice Root (Gancao) can regulate the Middle Jiao and replenish Qi; Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) can benefit the Stomach; and Jujube (Zao) can harmonize the Spleen.
Corydalis Rhizoma Yanhusuo (1 liang, powdered and stir-fried until fragrant) Clear Wine Qingjiu (1 sheng, used to steep the powder, taken warm)
For stabbing pain in women caused by attacking and conflicting Qi and Blood, radiating to the hypochondrium and diaphragm, this formula is indicated.
Corydalis Rhizoma (Yanhusuo) has a bitter and acrid taste. Bitterness can descend Qi, while acridity can dissipate Blood. Steeping it in wine allows its efficacy to reach the meridians.
Leek Juice Jiucai Zhi Clear Wine Qingjiu (equal parts, mixed and taken orally)
For chronic pain in the hypochondrium and diaphragm that alleviates with heat and worsens with cold, this formula is indicated.
The aforementioned symptoms are due to "dead blood" (stagnant blood). Therefore, Leek Juice is used to resolve stasis, and Clear Wine is used to move stagnation.
Genkwa Flos Yuanhua (mixed well with good vinegar, stir-fried until black but not burnt) Kansui Radix Daji (boiled for one shichen in running water, cleaned and dried) Kansui Radix Gansui (cleaned and dried, each 0.5 liang) Phellodendri Cortex Huangbai (3 liang, baked dry) Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma Dahuang (moistened with wine, steamed ripe, and dried, 1.5 liang)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder and make pills the size of hemp seeds using congee. Take 20-30 pills at bedtime, swallowed with saliva, or sent down with a mouthful of plain boiled water. The aim is to eliminate damp-phlegm from the upper jiao; adjust usage according to the condition. To induce purgation, take on an empty stomach.
For pain in the chest and abdomen caused by accumulation of phlegm-fluids in the epigastrium, this formula is indicated.
"Xiao" means to reduce or eliminate. "Xiao Wei" (Small Stomach) refers to eliminating phlegm and turbid substances from the Stomach. Kansui Radix (Gansui), Genkwa Flos (Yuanhua), and Kansui Radix (Daji) can purge damp-phlegm from the twelve meridians; Rhubarb Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang) assists in directing the action downward; Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai) restrains their acrid and fierce nature. This formula is a highly toxic preparation, akin to troops engaged in attack and killing. If used skillfully, it cures disease; if misused, it causes chaos.
