Preface: Water and fire correspond to Yin and Yang in the human body. Yang Qi is often in excess, therefore Fire syndromes (diseases caused by pathogenic heat-fire) are frequently encountered. This is what is meant by "one water cannot overcome five fires" (Yin fluids are insufficient to restrain hyperactive Yang fire). If a person can regulate the internal fire, achieving a state of harmony and balance (Chonghe), they have mastered the art of harmonizing Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi). However, excessive use of cold and cooling remedies leads to adverse effects. Since the advent of the Five Elements theory, Fire has been indispensable; thus, knowing that extinguishing Fire completely is incorrect. Now, examining more than twenty ancient formulas for treating Fire syndromes, is it merely about extinguishing fire?
Water is sufficient to assist/restrain Fire. Therefore, for symptoms such as mania, restlessness, vexation, and thirst caused by Excess Fire, internal administration of water and external application of water immersion represent the wonderful effect of Water-Fire Ji Ji (Balance of Water and Fire/Yin-Yang equilibrium). This concept has existed since the *I Ching* (Book of Changes).
Sweet Pear Juice belongs to the category of Water. Consumed raw, it can pacify the Yang of the Six Fu organs; cooked, it can nourish the Yin of the Five Zang organs. Excess Fire is suitable for raw consumption, while Deficiency Fire is suitable for cooked consumption.
General Review of Human Feces, Human Urine, Ningzhongbai (Calcined Human Urine Sediment), Cow Dung, Pig Dung, Horse Manure, and Donkey Urine
Sun Simiao recorded in the *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) that when treating Fire or Heat syndromes, one generally uses the juices from the aforementioned substances for drinking, often praising their miraculous efficacy. Why? The Classics state: Clear Yang emerges from the upper orifices, and Turbid Yin emerges from the lower orifices. Feces and urine exit through the lower orifices; regardless of whether human or animal, they are all Yin-Turbid substances. Precisely because they are Yin-Turbid, they are sufficient to restrain hyperactive Yang Fire (Solar Light). Some people disdain and avoid these materials because they fail to comprehend the subtleties of medicine.
Ancient physicians with divine skills used only human urine and Ningzhongbai (Calcined Human Urine Sediment); they never used formulas containing Qiushi (Autumn Stone/Crystallized Human Urine Extract). It is only in recent times that Qiushi has been widely used. Medicines possess Qi (aroma/vital energy) and Wei (flavor), Jing (essence) and Po (corporeal soul). After Qiushi undergoes decoction and refinement, its Qi and Wei change, and its Jing essence is removed; what remains is merely a withered Po. How can it be compared in efficacy to human urine and Ningzhongbai? This reflects the ignorance of the world's tendency to pursue novelty. Using Yin Qiushi (referring to less refined or naturally oriented preparations, closer to the original nature) would be closer to the truth.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Chuangui (Angelica Sinensis Radix), Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Huashi (Talcum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
This formula is indicated for conditions where pathogenic heat resides in both the exterior and interior, and there is Fire Excess in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner).
Mahuang and Fangfeng are herbs that release the exterior; for heat-fire residing in the exterior, they facilitate its discharge through sweating. Dahuang and Mangxiao are herbs that purge the interior; for heat-fire residing in the interior, they facilitate its discharge through defecation. Jingjie and Bohe are herbs that clear the Upper Jiao; for heat-fire at the vertex, they facilitate its discharge via the nasal orifices. Huashi, Zhizi, and Huangqin serve to eliminate pathogenic heat from various meridians. When heat-fire scorches the Blood, Chuanxiong, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix) can nourish it; when heat-fire damages the Qi, Baizhu and Gancao can tonify it.
