(That is, Liuyi San in the Summerheat section, also known as Tianshui San)
Huaishi (Talcum, six taels) Gancao (Licorice Root, one tael)
Grind together into powder, take three qian mixed with honey water.
For excess fire in the Six Fu-organs, manifesting as upper restlessness and thirst, lower constipation, and red, scanty, or painful urination, this formula is indicated.
Huaishi is cold in nature, thus it can clear heat from the Six Fu-organs; Gancao is neutral in nature, thus it can moderate the momentum of various fires.
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, wine-fried) Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, charred) Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, each one tael) Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, four taels) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, wine-soaked) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) Gancao (Licorice Root, each two taels)
Grind together into powder, take five qian per dose.
For fire stagnation in the Upper Jiao, manifesting as high fever and flushed face, this formula is indicated.
Huangqin and Zhizi are bitter in taste but odorless, thus they purge fire in the middle; Lianqiao and Bohe have light taste and light odor, thus they clear heat in the upper region; Dahuang and Mangxiao are salty and cold with strong flavor, thus they purge all kinds of excess conditions; Gancao is used for its mild nature that lingers in the diaphragm area. It is made into a powder rather than a decoction to utilize its sticky texture that stays in the diaphragm to achieve efficacy in the upper part.
Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, ten taels) Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Gancao (Licorice Root) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Wuxijiao (Rhino Horn, now typically substituted with Water Buffalo Horn Shuiniujia) Shishuang (Diospyros Persimmon Frost, each one tael) Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, three taels)
Make into honey pills for lozenges.
For fire above the diaphragm, morning hemoptysis, persistent redness of both cheeks, and unclear throat sensation, this formula is indicated.
To eliminate wind-heat, nothing surpasses Bohe, so it is used as the Sovereign herb; assisted by Wuxijiao (Water Buffalo Horn) to resolve heart-heat; adding Shishuang to generate body fluids; using Chuanxiong for its ability to clear the upper part; using Fangfeng for its dispersing effect; fearing the downward flow of other herbs, Jiegeng is used as a boat/oar to carry drugs upward; because fire spreads rapidly, Gancao (the State Elder) is used to moderate the action. The Master said: The throat is the manifestation of the Gallbladder; if there is only phlegm-heat in the throat but the diaphragm interior is harmonious, it is appropriate to use a formula to calm the Gallbladder.
Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taenia) Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, bran-fried) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed) Gancao (Licorice Root, each two taels) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith removed) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, each four taels)
For gallbladder heat causing vomiting of phlegm, rebellious qi with bitter vomiting, and dream-disturbed palpitations, this formula is indicated.
The Gallbladder belongs to Jia Wood, being Shaoyang within Yang; its normal state is warm, hence it is called Wendan Tang (Warm the Gallbladder Decoction). The clarity of Zhuru serves to remove heat; the acridity of Banxia serves to scatter rebellion; Zhishi serves to break excess accumulation; Chenpi serves to eliminate stagnation; Shengjiang serves to calm vomiting; Gancao serves to moderate rebellion. After the resolution of Shanghan (Cold Damage), there are mostly...
