Yinchen (2 qian) Fuling (Poria) Zhuling (Polyporus) Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, each 1 qian) Huashi (Talcum, 1.5 qian)
For those presenting with jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), difficult and scanty urination, restlessness, and thirst, this formula is indicated.
Excess heat accumulating internally, unable to dissipate or vent outward, causes jaundice. The difficulty in urination is due to the downward pouring of heat. Restlessness occurs because heat invades the clear yang regions of the upper jiao; thirst arises because pathogenic heat steams and scorches, preventing the generation of body fluids to moisten the throat. In this formula, Yinchen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae) treats jaundice; assisting with Fuling (Poria) and Zhuling (Polyporus) promotes diuresis; assisting with Huashi (Talcum) clears and promotes the flow of heat; assisting with Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) utilizes the principle of "like attracts like" to guide the medicinal power directly to the nest of the pathogenic heat. Once the internal heat is eliminated, body fluids are naturally generated, qi transformation resumes, and urination becomes smooth.
Yinchen (1 liang) Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit, 3 pieces) Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, 3.5 qian)
For those presenting with jaundice, dark and difficult urination, and constipation, this formula is indicated.
Yinchen is bitter and cold, capable of promoting the resolution of jaundice. Zhizi clears fire, acting downwards through its twisting nature, treating dark and difficult urination. Dahuang attacks and unblocks constipation, which is a common knowledge. Once both large and small bowels are unblocked, damp-heat is discharged through two routes, and jaundice is naturally resolved.
Zhizi (15 pieces) Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, 2 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 liang)
For those presenting with jaundice, persistent fever, and patent urination and defecation, this formula is indicated.
Jaundice with persistent fever indicates that yang pathogenic factors have not yet been expelled. Since defecation is patent, Dahuang is not used. Since urination is patent, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is not used. Only the bitterness of Zhizi and Huangbai is used to overcome the heat, and the sweetness of Gancao is used to moderate the condition's momentum, thus completing the treatment method.
Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, 5 pieces) Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit, 14 pieces) Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, 1 liang) Douchi (Prepared Soybean, 1 sheng)
For those presenting with jaundice, fever, abdominal pain, and a slippery pulse at the right guan position, named Grain Jaundice (Gu Dan), this formula is indicated. Wine Jaundice (Jiu Dan) is treated similarly.
Jaundice with fever is due to the stagnation of mild fire. Abdominal pain and a slippery pulse at the right guan position indicate accumulation of food and water. Therefore, Zhishi and Dahuang are used to attack the accumulation of food and water. Zhizi and Douchi are used to resolve the stagnation of mild fire. It is also said: Zhizi and Douchi were once used by Zhang Zhongjing to treat mental restlessness and nausea; Zhishi and Dahuang were once used by Zhang Zhongjing to purge gastric excess. Therefore, when wine jaundice presents with desire to vomit...
