Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏) [1 liang], Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术) [0.5 liang], Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 麻黄) [7.5 qian], Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 附子) [half piece], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) [2 qian].
For Hongjiaojiao (Hongjiaojiao, a disease characterized by swelling and pain in the lower legs and feet) with pain and swelling, where cold and heat pathogens struggle against each other, and the pulse is deep and fine, this formula is indicated.
When Qi fails to flow smoothly, there is pain; when Blood fails to circulate, there is swelling. This is why Hongjiaojiao becomes a disease of stagnation. The struggling of cold and heat refers to the conflict between pathogenic factors and healthy Qi. A deep pulse indicates an interior condition, and a fine pulse indicates Yin deficiency or dampness. It is named "Yuebi Tang" (Yuebi Decoction). "Yue" means to vent or disperse; "Bi" means humble or low. This formula can vent Qi that is stuck in the lowest parts of the body, hence the name. Shigao is cold in nature and heavy in texture; its coldness clears heat, and its heaviness guides it downward. Fuzi is acrid and hot; its acridity moves stagnation, and its heat strengthens Qi. With Mahuang as an assistant, the stagnation caused by cold and heat will be discharged through the sweat pores. Baizhu and Gancao are used for their warm and neutral properties, to restore harmonious Qi after the dispersing action. Gancao is used in a smaller amount because its mild nature might delay reaching the lower parts if used in large quantities.
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 桂心), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma, 防己) [each 4 qian], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 甘草) [roasted, 2 qian], Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 白术), Fuling (Poria, 茯苓) [each 3 qian].
Decoct in water and take cold.
For cold-damp Hongjiaojiao with pain and numbness, and bilateral Chi pulses that are deep and fine, this formula is indicated.
This is a Bi syndrome (Obstruction Syndrome). The *Neijing* states: When Cold predominates, it is called Painful Bi; when Dampness predominates, it is called Fixed Bi. Now, with pain and numbness, it indicates both Cold and Dampness. The Chi pulses govern the feet; a deep pulse indicates interior pathology, and a slow pulse indicates Cold. In this formula, Guixin and Fuzi are used to warm and dispel Cold. Fangji and Baizhu are used to control Dampness. Gancao and Fuling are spleen-targeting herbs; they support the insufficiency of Spleen Earth Qi and restrain the excess of Dampness. However, it must be taken cold so that the properties of Fuzi and Guixin act downwards without ascending transversely upwards.
Chuanjiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, 川椒) [1 liang], Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, 葱) [one handful], Jiangsheng (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 姜) [a piece the size of a palm, crushed].
Use one basin of water, decoct to make a soup for washing.
For anyone suffering from cold-damp Hongjiaojiao with painful and uncomfortable limbs, besides taking internal decoctions, external fumigation and washing with this soup is suitable.
Chuanjiao is acrid and hot, capable of treating Bi syndromes caused by cold-damp. Jiang and Cong are acrid and warm, capable of promoting the flow of Qi in the skin and muscles. It is also said: All cases of Hongjiaojiao are diseases of stagnation; washing them yields no bad results.
