Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Bajiji (Morindae Officinalis Radix, removed core), Shanzhuyu (Corni Fructus), Rongcongrong (Cistanches Herba, soaked in wine), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Guangui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Fuling (Poria), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus). These herbs are of equal proportion. For each dose of five qian, add a small amount of Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), and decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Zao (Jujubae Fructus) for oral administration.
This formula aims to clear Liver Qi to benefit the source of Water (Kidney Yin), and gather Kidney Qi to restrain the usurping Fire. When Water can nourish Wood, solitary Yang will not ascend, Heart Qi will become unobstructed, and aphasia (loss of speech due to tongue stiffness) will resolve spontaneously. However, for cases of lower limb paralysis where walking is impossible, it is still necessary to add herbs that strengthen tendons and facilitate joint movement. The reason why wind-dispelling herbs are not used is precisely out of fear that they might assist Fire; therefore, they are specifically excluded, and this should not be subject to criticism.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) 2 qian, Wuyao (Linderae Radix) 1.5 qian, Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) 0.5 qian, Chenxiang (Aquilariae Resina, ground into juice) 0.3 qian, Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Suye (Perillae Folium), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) 3 qian.
Decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) for administration.
This formula harmonizes Qi and regulates Qi distribution; it consists entirely of Qi-regulating herbs and lacks any blood-activating or tendon-relaxing agents. It is suitable for regulating Qi and dispersing Wind, but if used to treat hemiplegia (half-body paralysis) and facial deviation (deviation of mouth and eyes), it is advisable to add blood-activating and tendon-relaxing herbs.
Ai Cao (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) collected on the fifth day of the fifth month, the seventh day of the seventh month, and the ninth day of the ninth month is considered best. The quantity is unrestricted. Remove coarse stems, retaining branches, flowers, leaves, and fruits. Mix with wine, steam, and sun-dry nine times, then form into honey pills.
The nature of Ai Cao (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), as a single herb, can search out Wind and drive away Dampness. It can be used for leg and foot numbness caused by the binding of Wind-Dampness, as well as various damp sores. However, if used to treat facial deviation caused by stroke (Zhong Feng), it would only increase dryness and heat.
Bafuzi (Hydrargyri Oxydum Rubrum), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Quanxie (Scorpio).
Grind these three herbs into powder equally. Take two qian per dose, mixed with wine for administration.
If there is only facial deviation without other symptoms, it indicates that the meridians and zang-fu organs are not injured. This condition is caused by Wind-Phlegm accumulating and generating heat in the Taiyang and Yangming meridians. These three herbs directly travel through the interior collaterals, dispelling Wind and resolving Phlegm, which is highly effective; therefore, blood-activating herbs are not necessary.
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Wuyao (Linderae Radix).
Decoct with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma). Administer with added Jiangzhi (Zingiberis Juice) and Zhuli (Bambusae Sap). For Rou Jing (Flaccid Spasm), add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus); for Gang Jing (Rigid Spasm), add Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) and Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba); if trismus (lockjaw), teeth grinding, and solid stool occur, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma).
This formula activates Blood, dispels Wind, resolves Phlegm, and clears Heat. There are established methods for modifying this prescription for both Gang Jing (Rigid Spasm) and Rou Jing (Flaccid Spasm). This is an excellent prescription from Mr. Jie'an.
