Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine) Longdancao (Radix Gentianae, washed with wine) Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried until black) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, stir-fried) Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, stir-fried) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, stir-fried)
Each one tael, Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, soaked in wine) Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, levigated with water) Lvhua (Aloe, five qian) Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, two qian) Shexiang (Moschus, five fen)
Made into honey pills, taken down with ginger decoction.
The bitterness and coldness are extreme, beyond addition; such harsh preparations, how can they be lightly tried? My opinion is to remove the Three Yellows (Huanglian, Huangqin, Huangbai) and Two Musk-like aromatics (Muxiang, Shexiang), so that it might be usable.
Longdancao (Radix Gentianae, stir-fried with wine) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, stir-fried) Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried with wine) Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, stir-fried with wine) Cheqianzi (Semen Plantaginis) Mutong (Caulis Akebiae) Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, stir-fried with wine) Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) Sheng Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata)
This formula is suitable for cases of excessive fire in the Liver and Gallbladder, with damp-heat stagnation and steaming. It is especially wonderful for diseases manifesting in the lower part of the body.
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, six taels, stir-fried with ginger juice) Wuzhuyu (Fructus Evodiae, one tael, stir-fried with salt water)
Made into water pills.
The brilliance of this formula lies entirely in the bitter descending and acrid opening. Not only does it treat hypochondriac pain, liver distension, acid regurgitation, and hernia, but it is also effective in treating epidemic pathogens, cholera, and muscle spasms (cramps).
Longdancao (Radix Gentianae) Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried) Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, steamed with wine) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, washed with wine) Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae)
Equal parts, made into honey pills. Taken down with bamboo leaf decoction.
The nature of the Liver is extremely rigid; it should be nourished gently rather than attacked. This formula can only clear the stagnant fire of the Liver meridian; if used to treat fright, anxiety, or sinew atrophy, I have not seen its efficacy.
Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, four taels) Huoxiang (Herba Pogostemonis, seven qian) Shanzhi (Fructus Gardeniae, stir-fried until black, one tael) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, five qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, two qian)
Pulverized and slightly stir-fried, mixed and taken with fragrant wine.
Wind-dispersing herbs scatter latent fire, while cooling herbs drain accumulated heat. Furthermore, sweet and mild herbs harmonize the middle jiao, preventing injury to healthy qi. This method is quite excellent.
Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) Danpi (Cortex Moutan) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae)
Cool blood and resolve heat, raise yang and disperse fire. When the Stomach qi is clear, all diseases will naturally disappear.
Shengdi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) Shudi (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) Tiandong (Tuber Ophiopogonis) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) Shihu (Caulis Dendrobii) Ychen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) Zhike (Fructus Aurantii) Pipaye (Folium Eriobotryae) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) Equal parts
Take five qian per dose.
Suitable for treating deficiency heat of the Stomach accompanied by blood disorders. If dampness accumulates and transforms into heat, without blood disorders, it is better to remove the Rehmanniae roots and add Tianhuafen (Radix Platycodi) and Fuling (Sclerotium Poriae).
