Mu Xiang (Costus Root), Bing Lang (Areca Seed), Qing Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel, stir-fried with vinegar), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel, white pith removed), Zhi Qiao (Bitter Orange Fruit, stir-fried), Huang Bo (Phellodendron Bark, stir-fried with wine), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, stir-fried with Evodia Decoction), San Leng (Knotweed Rhizome, boiled with vinegar), E Zhu (Curcuma Rhizome, boiled with vinegar), each 5 qian; Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, soaked in wine) 1 liang; Xiang Fu (Cyperus Rhizome), Hei Qian Niu (Black Morning Glory Seed), each 2 liang. Process into water pills. Another prescription adds Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), washed with wine.
This formula is milder than "Sha Wan" (Sand Pill), yet it still contains many harsh purgative agents. One must ask: after the pathogenic factors recede, how much of the Yuan Qi (Primary Vital Energy) remains? Even with the addition of one moistening herb like Dang Gui, it is one part nourishing against ten parts attacking; how can it possibly be beneficial? These methods are recorded in original texts as applicable to robust individuals. However, robust individuals rarely suffer from such conditions; most patients are those with Spleen deficiency and Qi weakness. One must not use the excuse of it being an empirical formula to prescribe it recklessly.
Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) 1 liang; Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange Fruit, stir-fried with bran), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root, stir-fried with wine), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, stir-fried with wine), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, stir-fried), each 5 qian; Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, stir-fried with soil), Fu Ling (Poria), each 2 qian; Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) 3 qian. Process into pills using steamed wheat dumplings as a binder.
It is effective for treating abdominal pain and diarrhea caused by Damp-Heat accumulation. However, the dosages of Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) and Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) are still within the range that could be reduced, lest their excessive bitter-cold nature damage the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner) and Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
Select 20–30 jin of fat and tender beef (cow or bull). Chop finely, wash clean, and boil in running long-flowing water over mulberry wood fire until thoroughly softened. Filter out the dregs and retain the clear juice. Return the juice to the pot and simmer with alternating mild and strong heat until it turns amber-colored. Select a quiet, bright, and non-drafty room. The patient should fast for one night prior. Sit in the room and drink one cup at a time, repeating every short interval, accumulating to dozens of cups. If the disease is located in the upper body, vomiting will occur; if in the lower body, diarrhea will occur; if in the middle, both vomiting and diarrhea will occur. Observe the expelled matter until the root of the disease is considered exhausted, then stop inducing vomiting and purging. Thirst will inevitably follow. Do not provide ordinary fluids. The patient's urine will likely increase in volume; collect this urine for the patient to drink, named "Lun Hui Tang" (Samsara Decoction). It not only quenches thirst but also cleanses residual impurities. After defecation, when fatigue sets in and hunger is felt, first provide rice water, then thin congee. After three days, gradually introduce thick congee and soft rice. Avoid beef for several years.
The Dao Cang Fa (Stomach-Clearing Method) is a technique to strengthen the Spleen. The nature of cattle belongs to Earth, which best tonifies the Spleen. When Spleen Qi becomes substantial, the transportation and transformation of the Central Zhou (Middle Jiao) become smooth, leaving no room for stagnation and filth. Thus, pathogens in the upper region are forced to exit from above, and those in the lower region are forced to exit from below. When Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) is strong and Xie Qi (Pathogenic Qi) diminishes, this is the natural principle.
