Wendu (Warm Toxin) disease arises from contracting cold-toxin in winter, which manifests in spring. Symptoms include mental restlessness and oppression in the epigastrium, or vomiting accompanied by coughing. This occurs because heat-toxin has been stagnant for a long time; once it erupts, the condition will necessarily be severe. Treatment is suitable with:
Or Huanglian Jupi Tang (Coptis and Tangerine Peel Decoction).
See the "Cold Section" for the formula.
To treat Wendu (Warm Toxin) presenting with fever and vomiting:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Jupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Gange (Puerariae Radix), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Decoct without a guiding agent and take orally.
Wen Nue (Warm Malaria) is a residual illness resulting from mishandled Shanghan (Cold Damage). It involves Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) pathogenic factors situated between the exterior and interior. If improper sweating, emesis, or purgation are used, the condition remains unresolved. This depletes body fluids, causing dryness in the stomach. Wood-pathogen (Liver Qi) overacting on Earth (Spleen/Stomach) inevitably leads to delirious speech and alternating chills and fever. If Chaihu Syndrome (Bupleurum Pattern) persists, it is not considered adverse; if Chaihu Syndrome has ceased, it is termed a residual illness. One must determine what error was made and treat according to the symptoms.
To treat women who have suffered Fengzhong (Wind Strike) for six or seven days, subsequently developing alternating chills and fever at regular intervals, while menstruation has just ceased: this indicates Cold invading the Blood Chamber (Xueshi), where blood becomes congealed, causing symptoms resembling malaria with regular paroxysms. This medicine governs this condition. See the preceding "Zhonghan Section" for the formula.

(See preceding "Zhonghan Section" for formula reference)
See the preceding "Zhonghan Section" for treating Wen Nue (Warm Malaria) where heat predominates over chills.
To treat Wen Nue (Warm Malaria) where chills predominate over heat:
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Liangjiang (Zingiberis Tuber), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Decoct two units of water with three slices of fresh ginger until reduced to 80%. Take after meals.
Onset before Summer Solstice is termed Wenbing (Warm Disease); onset after Summer Solstice is termed Rebing (Heat Disease).
The Classics state: "If injured by cold in winter, one will surely suffer warm disease in spring." This refers to contracting seasonal pathogens that do not manifest immediately but lie dormant between the skin and interstices, erupting upon stimulation in spring or summer. Furthermore, Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Shangfeng (Wind Strike) involve pathogenic factors entering from the exterior, first affecting the exterior while the interior remains harmonious; thus, there is fever, stiffness, nasal congestion, but no thirst. Warm-heat diseases arise from internal pathogenic factors; thus, there is fever, headache, no nasal congestion, but thirst. Pathogens of Shanghan enter via meridians and deepen gradually; treatment requires distinguishing Taiyang, Yangming, Shaoyang, Taiyin, Shaoyin, and Jueyin, as well as exterior/interior and cold/heat, with precise accuracy before administering therapy. For warm-heat diseases arising internally, treatment involves only releasing the exterior, purging the interior, or clearing heat in the middle jiao. Medications must primarily consist of cooling and detoxifying agents. If epidemic warm pathogens are involved, they should be treated concurrently.
The Maijue (Pulse Classic) states: "When both Yin and Yang pulses are vigorous, and cold is contracted again, it transforms into warm-heat disease." It also states: "Floating pulse is slippery; deep pulse is scattered and choppy; these are pulses of warm disease." The pulse of warm disease may appear in various meridians; treatment should follow the affected meridian.
