(From *Jin Gui Yao Lue*)
Treats stroke (Zhong Feng) characterized by vexatious heaviness in the four limbs and a sensation of coldness and deficiency in the heart/mind (Vexatious heaviness in the four limbs is due to wind pathogen invading the meridians, with heat accompanying dampness; coldness in the heart/mind is due to Yang deficiency). *Wai Tai Mi Yao* uses it to treat wind-induced epilepsy.
Chrysanthemi Flos (40 fen) Fangfeng Baizhu (10 fen) Jiegeng Renshen Fuling Danggui Chuanxiong Ganjiang Guizhi
Take for forty days.
This formula consists of herbs belonging to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian, and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Chrysanthemum grows in autumn, absorbing the essence of Metal and Water, capable of restraining Fire and pacifying Wood; when Wood is pacified, Wind subsides, and Fire descends to gather/converge, also resolving stubborn Phlegm. Administering with wine serves to promote the movement of medicinal potency. (Yu Jiayan stated: Treating Wind by expelling Wind and tonifying Deficiency, who cannot do this? However, employing the method of "blocking and intercepting" within the processes of expelling and tonifying is beyond ordinary speculation. The formula uses Mingfan Shi (Alumen) to astringe the other herbs, causing them to accumulate without dispersing, gradually filling the empty orifices, so that old Wind is completely eliminated and new Wind cannot enter; because Alumen's nature stops when cold and moves when hot, it is further instructed to be taken cold. When Wind-Stroke pathogens enter the Zang organs, one must most fear Wind-Cold taking advantage of deficiency to enter the Heart. Therefore, Chrysanthemum is used as the Sovereign herb. Zhang Zhongjing’s formulation demonstrates unique craftsmanship; citing this powder first for Stroke syndromes indicates deep appreciation for its merits.)
Appendix: *Feng Yin Tang* from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*: Dahuang Ganjiang Longgu (each 4 liang), Guizhi (3 liang), Gancao Muli (each 2 liang), Huashi Shigao Hanshuishi Chishizhi Baishizhi Zi Shiyu (each 6 liang). Pound and sieve, take an amount held between three fingers, boil for three boils, and take warm. Treats adult Wind-Stroke paralysis, pediatric convulsions and spasms, occurring dozens of times daily. Chao Yuanfang used it to treat Hong Kong Foot (Note: Regarding Hei San and Feng Yin Tang, Yu believed them to be Zhang Zhongjing’s sacred formulas, whereas Cheng Yunlai in *Jin Gui Zhi Jie* stated that Hou Shi Hei San, Feng Yin Tang, Fangji Dihuang Tang, Tou Feng Mo Gao, and Fanshi Tang do not treat Stroke or Bi-Syndrome of joints; these were added by Song dynasty correctors as Tang dynasty formulas and thus deleted. He also asked if Zhang Zhongjing, the ancestor of formulas, would adopt Hou Shi’s method. I argue: Zhang Zhongjing had many formulas; did they not inherit from predecessors, nor originate solely from one person? If a formula is good, even if from Tang or Song, can it be deleted? However, paralysis necessarily involves Qi and Blood deficiency. Feng Yin Tang uses Dahuang as Sovereign and contains mostly mineral drugs; does one not consider the fierce nature of mineral drugs? Although Yu praised it deeply, did he truly use it to treat Wind with experimental success, or was it merely speculation by an outsider? As for Hei San, using Chrysanthemum as Sovereign and adding Qi-Blood regulating, exterior-releasing, and Phlegm-resolving herbs makes it different from this one. Ang notes: Stroke is a critical syndrome; few ancient formulas are excellent. Here recorded...)
