Treats chronic illness leading to physical debility and emaciation, with incessant vomiting (Stomach cold causes vomiting, Stomach heat also causes vomiting; the presence of retained phlegm or accumulated fluid retention all induce vomiting; this case refers to deficiency fire resulting from chronic illness).
Chenpi (Exocarpium Citri Reticulatae), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Renshen (Radix Ginseng), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Chifuling (Poria cum Ligno), Pipaye (Folium Eriobotryae). Decoct with Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Dazao (Fructus Jujubae). If caused by Stomach cold, remove Zhuru and Maidong, add Dingxiang (Flos Caryophylli); if caused by excess fire, remove Renshen.
This formula acts on the Foot-Yangming meridian. Stomach fire rushes upward, assisted by Liver-Gallbladder fire, preventing Lung Metal qi from descending, thus causing vomiting. Zhuru, Pipaye, and Maidong can all clear the Lungs and harmonize the Stomach; when Lung Metal is clear, Liver Qi also becomes pacified (Liver Wood carrying Ministerial Fire rushing upward causes hiccups; Metal controls Wood); Erchen Tang (Chenpi, Banxia) disperses rebellious qi; Chifuling descends Heart fire; Shengjiang is the supreme herb for treating vomiting; because of chronic illness leading to debility, Renshen and Gancao are used to tonify.
Jupi Zhuru Tang from *Jin Gui Yao Lue*: Jupi (2 sheng), Zhuru (2 sheng), Renshen (1 liang), Gancao (5 liang), Shengjiang (0.5 jin), additionally adding Banxia and Maidong.
Treats asthma arising from Lung deficiency combined with cold invasion, where qi rebels and there is heat in the diaphragm (There is tenacious phlegm fixed in the diaphragm, and external atypical pathogenic factors invade, leading to asthma. Because cold binds the exterior, Yang qi congregates in the diaphragm and cannot diffuse outward, causing diaphragmatic heat and rebellious qi. Coarse sound indicates Xiao [wheezing], which is an excess condition due to external invasion; rapid breathing indicates Chuan [shortness of breath], which is a deficiency condition of the Lung).
Baiguo (21 seeds, stir-fried until yellow), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, processed with ginger), Kuandonghua (Flos Farfarae, 3 qian), Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori, honey-fried), Suzi (Fructus Perillae, 2 qian).
This formula acts on the Hand-Taiyin meridian. Exterior cold should be dispersed; Mahuang, Xingren, Sangbaipi, and Gancao are pungent and sweet to disperse, draining Lung heat and releasing the exterior; interior deficiency should be astringed; Kuotonghua etc... made into powder.
In the human body, Qi serves as Wei (Defensive) energy, and Blood serves as Ying (Nutritive) energy. The classics state: Ying is refined essence from water and grain, it harmonizes the five Zang organs and distributes to the six Fu organs, thereby entering the meridians... vision... and able... ; Blood... in... heat... then... disease.
