Treats continuous spontaneous sweating, Qi deficiency with weak exterior resistance, and susceptibility to wind-cold (Yang has the function of guarding the exterior and maintaining consolidation; when Yang is deficient and cannot guard the exterior, body fluids are not consolidated).
Huangqi (Honey-fried, 4 liang) Fangfeng (1 liang) Baizhu (Stir-fried, 2 liang). Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose.
This prescription acts on the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Huangqi tonifies Qi and specifically consolidates the muscular exterior, thus serving as the Sovereign herb; Baizhu benefits the Spleen, and the Spleen governs the muscles, thus serving as the Minister herb; Fangfeng dispels wind and acts as a vanguard among wind-dispelling herbs, yet Huangqi fears it (referring to their mutual restraint and promotion), thus serving as the Envoy herb. Because it benefits Wei-Qi and consolidates the exterior, it is named Yupingfeng San (Li Dongyuan stated: "When Huangqi is combined with Fangfeng, its efficacy is greatly enhanced, taking advantage of their mutual fear and mutual assistance." *Zhunsheng* stated: "In cases of stroke with hemiplegia, there is none that does not arise from the failure of True Qi to circulate freely. Therefore, Huangqi is an indispensable Sovereign herb, and Fangfeng is an indispensable Minister herb. Huangqi assists True Qi, while Fangfeng carries the Qi assisted by Huangqi to circulate throughout the body, also possessing the function of treating wind pathogens." Xu Yinzong treated Empress Dowager Wang's stroke with locked jaw by fumigating her with a decoction of these two herbs, curing her; how much more so if taken internally?)
If the aforementioned herbs are decocted in equal proportions, it is named Huangqi Tang: Jiegao used this formula to substitute Guizhi Tang for treating fever with sweating, weak pulse, aversion to wind and cold during spring and summer. If aversion to wind is severe, add Guizhi. Also, using Chuanxiong, Cangzhu, and Qianghuo in equal proportions, it is named Chuanxiong Tang; used to substitute Mahuang Tang for treating fever without sweating, aversion to wind and cold during autumn and winter.
Treats all conditions of Yang deficiency and weak Qi, Spleen decline and Lung damage, lack of appetite, emaciation with sallow complexion, dry skin and falling hair, and a fine, soft pulse (The Spleen is the mother of all things, the Lung is the mother of Qi; once the Spleen and Stomach are deficient, Lung Qi fails first. The Spleen fails to transport and transform, hence lack of appetite; reduced food intake means Ying-Wei [Nutritive and Defensive Qi] have no source...).
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Baizhu (Earth-stir-fried) Fuling (2 qian) Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 qian). Decoct with 3 slices of Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and 2 Zao (Jujube fruits).
This prescription acts on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Renshen is sweet and warm, greatly tonifying Yuan Qi, serving as the Sovereign herb; Baizhu is bitter and warm, drying dampness and tonifying Spleen Qi, serving as the Minister herb; Fuling... receives its influence... therefore...
Adding Chenpi (Citrus Peel) to this base formula creates Yigong San (created by Qian Yi): regulates the Spleen and Stomach. Adding Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) further creates Liujunzi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction): treats Qi deficiency with phlegm, Spleen deficiency with weak motility, cold-deficiency stomach pain, or abdominal pain with diarrhea. Adding Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) and Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) to Liujunzi Tang treats inability to move the limbs (the Spleen governs the four limbs). Adding Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Gegen (Pueraria Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Bai... and Zao to decoct creates Sishou... When Qi and [pathogen] clash, it manifests as... This is a formula. Adding to this base... paralysis, on the right side indicates Qi deficiency... treats Spleen deficiency with muscle heat, diarrhea, and false heat attacks... treats Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) with inability to eat. Removing Renshen from this base and adding... creates a formula. Removing Fuling from this base and adding Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) creates Si... If Yin and Yang are not yet distinguished, administer tentatively; if it is Yang Jue (Yang collapse) causing stool...
Liushen San (created by Chen Wuyue): treats children who develop fever again after the release of exterior heat (Secular physicians at this stage often fail to understand, either administering cooling medicines again, attempting to release the exterior again, or declaring it untreatable. This is because both interior and exterior are deficient, and Qi fails to return to its origin... Decoct to harmonize Stomach Qi, thereby converging Yang to return inward, and the body will cool.)
Named Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction): treats Heart and Lung deficiency damage, and dual deficiency of Qi and Blood (the Heart governs Blood... nourishes the skin and muscles (only when Qi and Blood are abundant do muscles grow). If the injury is severe, involving True Yin... Within Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), adding Huangqi to assist Yang and consolidate the exterior, and Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) to guide fire back to its origin... When tonifying, do not purge; this decoction exemplifies such principles). Removing Chuanxiong from Shiquan Dabu Tang (Ten Complete Tonifying Decoction) and adding Chenpi creates... Palpitations, muscle twitching, or continuous sweating, as well as persistent diarrhea and body pain following erroneous purgation.
Vertigo, palpitations, and muscle twitching syndromes; Yangming disorders are suitable for purgation, but excessive purgation leads to loss of Yin fluid, hence symptoms of diarrhea and body pain.) Shi... Qianghuo, Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Duzhong (Eucommia Bark), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) create Dafangfeng Tang (Great Wind-Dispelling Decoction): treats He Xi Feng (Crane Knee Wind / Genu Varum with joint swelling).
