Treats heat damaging the primordial qi, manifesting as shortness of breath, fatigue and listlessness, thirst, and profuse sweating, as well as cough due to Lung deficiency. (Explanation: The Lung governs Qi; fire-heat injuring the Lung causes shortness of breath; Metal is controlled by Fire, failing to generate Water, causing thirst; lack of Qi leads to fatigue; the Lung governs the skin and hair, so deficiency causes sweating; deficient fire harassing the Lung causes cough. Li Dongyuan stated: Jin Ye [Body Fluids], if uncontrolled...)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (5 fen), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus) (7 grains).
This formula acts on the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. The Lung governs Qi; when Lung Qi is vigorous, the Qi of the other four Zang organs is also vigorous. Deficiency leads to faint pulse and shortness of breath. Renshen is sweet and warm, greatly tonifying Lung Qi, serving as the Sovereign drug; Maidong is sweet and cold, moistening the Lung, nourishing Water, clearing the Heart, and draining heat, serving as the Minister drug; Wuweizi is sour and warm, astringing the Lung, generating fluids, and consolidating dissipating Qi, serving as the Assistant drug. Since the Heart governs the vessels and the Lung receives all vessels (all vessels converge at the Lung; tonifying the Lung and clearing the Heart), Qi becomes sufficient and the pulse recovers, hence it is called "Sheng Mai" [Generating Pulse] (When a person is near death with an absent pulse, taking this can restore life, its efficacy is great). In summer, when heat is prevalent and Fire controls Metal, protection of the Lung should be the priority. Taking this in the morning can tonify Qi and dispel summer-heat. (Li Dongyuan stated: The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and the Hand-Taiyang Small Intestine Meridian both belong to the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. The Large Intestine governs Jin Ye [thin body fluids], and the Small Intestine governs Ye [thick body fluids]. The Large and Small Intestines receive the Yang Qi of the Stomach to transport Jin Ye to the Upper Jiao, irrigating the skin and hair and filling the Cou Li [interstices]; if dietary habits are irregular and Stomach Qi is insufficient, the Large and Small Intestines have no Qi to receive, leading to the exhaustion of Jin Ye. He also stated: Mai [Pulse/Vessels] is Yuan Qi [Primordial Qi]. The sweetness of Renshen tonifies Yuan Qi and drains fire-heat; the bitter-cold nature of Maidong nourishes the source of Water and clears dry Metal; the sourness of Wuweizi drains fire and tonifies Geng Metal [Large Intestine] and Lung Metal. He also stated: In summer, add Huang Qin [Scutellariae Radix] and Gan Cao [Licorice Root] to take.)
Adding Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Zhi Gancao (Prepared Licorice Root) to this formula creates Wuweizi Tang (Schisandra Decoction); forming pills with steamed wheat cake creates Buqi Wan (Qi-Tonifying Pill): treating Lung deficiency with scanty Qi, cough, and spontaneous sweating. Adding Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) to this formula...
