Treats dysentery with hematochezia (blood in stool) caused by dampness invading the Spleen Meridian.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, soaked in rice water, stir-fried, 3 liang), Diyu (Sanguisorbae Radix, charred black, 1 liang). Decoct 1 liang per dose.
This is a formula acting on the Foot-Taiyin and Foot-Yangming meridians. Cangzhu dries dampness and strengthens the Spleen, raises Yang and opens stagnation; Diyu clears heat and cools blood, its astringent nature stops lower bleeding; it is a balanced formula for treating bloody dysentery and intestinal wind. It should not be used in the early stages of the disease.
Adding Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Ejiao (Asini Corii Colla), and Juanbai (Selaginellae Herba) to this formula names it Shaoyao Diyu Tang (created by Hejian): Treats diarrhea and dysentery with pus and blood discharge, even to the point of rectal prolapse (Ejiao nourishes blood and fluids,
Treats bloody strangury (Xuelin) formed by stagnant heat in the Lower Jiao (The Heart governs blood, and the Small Intestine is its Fu organ; when heat is severe and forces blood to flow into the bladder/cystic cavity, exiting with urine, it is called bloody strangury. Urine must seep from the Small Intestine into the Bladder; if Heart heat is excessive, Small Intestine heat follows, as stated in the classics: "Heat transferring from the bladder to the urinary bladder results in difficult urination and hematuria." However, heat often combines with dampness. Dai says: Fresh red blood indicates excess heat in the Heart and Small Intestine; dark, clotted blood indicates deficiency-cold in the Kidney and Bladder. Zhunsheng states: Often, extreme heat causes blood to coagulate and turn black.
Xiaoji (Cirsii Herba), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen, charred black), Oujie (Nelumbinis Node), Huashi (Talcum), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried), Danzhuye (Lophatheri Herba), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma)
(each in equal parts)
This acts on the Hand and Foot Taiyang meridians. Xiaoji and Oujie clear heat and dissipate stasis; Shengdihuang cools blood; Puhuang stops bleeding (raw promotes blood circulation, charred astringes); Mutong descends Heart and Lung fire and directs it to the Small Intestine; Zhizi disperses stagnant fire in the Three Jiao, expelling it via urine; Danyezhu cools the Heart and clears Lung heat (the Lung is the source of water generation; all formulas promoting urination must...)
Treats pain unbearable from traumatic injury falling from height, where evil blood remains in the hypochondrium (regardless of which meridian is injured, evil blood inevitably accumulates in the hypochondrium because the Liver governs blood storage)
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 5 qian), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gualougen (Trichosanthis Radix), Chuanshanjia (Manis Squama, processed, 2 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Honghua (Carthami Flos, 2 qian), Taoren (Persicae Semen, 50 pieces, skin and tips removed, crushed), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, soaked in wine). Take 1 liang per dose, decocted with wine. Stop when bowel movement is unobstructed. (The original formula contains no Qianghuo, yet named thus, why?)
This acts on the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. The original text states: The Gallbladder and Liver meridians run along the hypochondrium, belonging to Jueyin and Shaoyang; therefore, Chaihu is used as the guiding drug and serves as the Sovereign herb; Danggui activates...
