Treats postpartum lochia that does not cease, with pain caused by attacking and rushing of blood stasis; as well as retained placenta and fetal death in utero, all resulting from blood stasis failing to circulate.
Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Guizhiwei (Cinnamon Twig with Tail - *Note: Context implies Dangguiwei/Codonopsis tail or Angelica caulis root end, usually Angelica sinensis tail in this formula context*), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Puhuang (Pollen Typhae, stir-fried), Guixin (Cinnamon Bark), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, stir-fried), Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried, 4 liang), Heidou (Black Soybean, stir-fried, peeled).
This is a prescription for the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. The aforementioned conditions are all due to blood stasis failing to move. Shu Dihuang, Danggui, and Baishao have moistening properties to nourish the blood; Puhuang and Heidou have slippery properties to promote blood circulation (Wang Ang notes: To promote blood circulation, Puhuang should be used raw); Guixin and Ganjiang have hot properties to break up blood stasis (Ganjiang is acrid and hot, capable of eliminating evil blood and generating new blood, thus it must be used for postpartum fever); Gancao is used to moderate the healthy qi; Tongbian (Child's urine) is used to dissipate stagnant and rebellious qi; Jiujiu (Wine) is added to guide the medicine into the blood level to assist its efficacy (For postpartum lochia stagnation due to labor injury, treat lightly with the first four ingredients. If accompanied by chronic cold qi stagnation causing blood coagulation and retained placenta, use the full formula for rapid action. *Bencao Gangmu* states: Suitable for excess cold and autumn/winter seasons; if one has an irritable temperament, emaciation, and internal heat, or during summer months, use with caution. This is Zhu Danxi's discussion).
Ancient Heishen San: Baicaoshuang (Willow Soot), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), equal parts. Decoct 2 qian per dose, add a small amount of Tongbian and Cu (Vinegar), mix and take. Treats breech presentation, malpresentation, and syndromes such as deficiency-impairment and metrorrhagia before and after childbirth.

Treats lochia stagnation, pain in the Pericardium Collateral, or abdominal pain caused by dead blood (Evil blood obstructs and fails to circulate, rushing upward to the Pericardium and blocking downward in the abdomen, both causing stifling pain).
Puhuang (Pollen Typhae), Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung), equal parts. Grind into powder, decoct into a paste, mix with vinegar and take.
This is a prescription for the Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Raw Puhuang is slippery and promotes blood circulation; Wulingzhi has a fishy odor and disperses blood qi. The fishy odor enters the Liver; both can enter the Jueyin meridians to invigorate blood and relieve pain, thus treating blood-stasis pain with miraculous effect.
Take 1 liang each of the original ingredients, add Mutong (Akebia Caulis) and Chishao (Red Peony Root), 5 qian each. Take 4 qian per dose with a little salt. Named Tongling San: Treats nine types of heart pain.
