Diseases are numerous. Examining medical formularies, many types are still missing, yet all belong to common ailments; how can there be no formulas for their treatment? These are now supplemented and included.
The syndrome of Zaos (buzzing sensation in the stomach/heartburn) may be caused by Fire, Phlegm, Fluid retention, or Parasites. Although various causes are mentioned, the source does not depart from the Spleen and Stomach. People who consume rich and refined foods often suffer from this. When it occurs, it feels like hunger prompting a desire to eat; in severe cases, it causes mental restlessness and chaotic discomfort. Along with Swallowing Acid (acid regurgitation), Vomiting Acid (sour vomiting), Dry Heaving, and Stomach Pain, these conditions are precursors to Yige (dysphagia) and Fanwei (regurgitation). (Suitable formulas include Sansheng Wan [Three Holy Pills] and Yueju Wan [Yueju Pill]. If accompanied by Phlegm, use Erchen Tang [Two Aged Decoction] added with Zhizi [Gardeniae Fructus] and Lianhua [Coptidis Rhizoma]; if accompanied by Fluid retention, use Danxi Daoyin Wan [Danxi's Guiding-Fluids Pill]; if accompanied by Parasites, use Wumei Wan [Mume Pill] or Jiuzhu Huanglian Wan [Wine-Boiled Coptis Pill].)
Sansheng Wan (Three Holy Pills) is highly effective for treating Zaos.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, four liang) Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum, one liang) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried, five qian)
Grind the above into fine powder, bind with paste made from Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), and form pills the size of mung beans. Take seventy to eighty pills per dose. Swallow with saliva after meals, or ginger decoction is also acceptable.
Yueju Wan (See Section 41)
Erchen Tang (See Section 16)
Danxi Daoyin Wan (Danxi's Guiding-Fluids Pill) treats Zaos caused by Water-Fluid retention.
Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, three qian) Baifuling (Poria, one liang) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, five qian) Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried, one liang) Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, seven qian)
Grind the above into fine powder, bind with paste made from Shenqu, and take as pills.
Wumei Wan (See Section 63)
Jiuzhu Huanglian Wan (See Section 55)
Swallowing Acid and Vomiting Acid are largely similar with minor differences. In Swallowing Acid, the acid sensation is in the chest and stomach, arising and ceasing suddenly, stinging the Stomach and piercing the Heart. In Vomiting Acid, acidic water or substances are vomited out, tasting like strong vinegar, irritating the throat and softening the teeth. Both result from external cold affecting the body and cold in the Stomach, food stagnation, fluid retention, failure of Grain Qi to differentiate properly, and stagnation in the Middle Jiao. It is just like brewing wine that fails to ferment; when time passes, it turns sour. The difference between swallowing and vomiting lies in the amount of fluids in the Stomach: in swallowing, there is little fluid; in vomiting, there is much fluid. Occasionally, it belongs to Fire, where Heat cannot dissipate; or to Wood (Liver), where Qi cannot extend. For undissipated Heat, disperse it; for unextended Qi, unblock it. Therefore, generally, warming the Middle and dispersing Cold is appropriate, allowing stagnation to open and the disease to heal itself. (Suitable formulas include Faxiang Huoxiang Anwei San [Huo Xiang An Wei Powder], Jiajian Erchen Tang [Modified Two Aged Decoction], Sanyin Quzhu Wan [Sanyin Qu Zhu Pill], Erchen Tang added with Wuzhuyu, Huanglian, Shenqu, and Cangzhu, and Jiuzhu Huanglian Wan.)
