The ear lobes being red and lustrous indicate survival. If they are dry, dusty, and appear cyanotic or black, it signifies the failure of the Kidney (Shen), which is fatal.
Stabbing pain within the ear, accompanied by yellowing of the ear lobes, constitutes a disease named "Yellow Ear" (Huang Er), resembling Taiyang syndrome (Taiyang Bing). (This occurs when wind pathogens invade the Kidney, causing sudden fever and aversion to cold, with stiffness of the spine and straightening of the back, presenting like spasm.)
If the tip of the nose is cyanotic, accompanied by abdominal pain and a sensation of cold, it is a fatal condition (an acute syndrome of Cold invading the Middle Jiao). If the color is slightly black but lustrous, it indicates Water Qi (fluid retention). If black and dry/rough, it results from sexual exhaustion. If blackish-yellow and shiny, it indicates Blood stasis (Yu Xue). If yellow, it indicates difficulty in urination (due to Damp-Heat failing to drain, leading to stagnation and yellowing). If bright and clear, it indicates retained fluids (Liu Yin) (due to impaired fluid metabolism, where Dampness generates Heat, resulting in a yellow and lustrous complexion). Redness indicates Lung Heat. Dry nostrils, closed eyes, and rinsing water without swallowing suggest an impending epistaxis (Nu). Nostrils appearing black as burnt coal and dry indicate Yang Toxin (Yang Du). Yellowish-black and withered appearance indicates Spleen Fire consuming Body Fluids, leading to dry stool constipation. Nasal congestion with turbid discharge indicates Wind-Heat.
Whiteness indicates Qi Deficiency or loss of Blood. Cold, slippery, and black nostrils indicate Yin Toxin (Yin Du). Flaring of the nostrils indicates Exhaustion of Lung Qi, which is incurable. Sweat beading on the bridge of the nose indicates extreme pain in the Heart and Spleen. In men, cyanosis at the nasal tip indicates lower abdominal pain or testicular pain. If the color hangs vertically and surrounds below the face king (the area below the nasal tip), it belongs to diseases of the genitalia, such as penile pain or Hu Hernia. In women, it indicates diseases of the Bladder and Uterus. Scattered color indicates Qi pain (scattered color implies Qi stagnation pain without accumulation). Congested/stagnant color indicates Accumulation (Ju) (Blood congealing with Qi stagnation). The shape and position of the accumulation correspond to the form of the color.
Chapped, dry, and cracked lips indicate Spleen Heat (as stated in the classics: the splendor of the Stomach and Spleen manifests in the four white borders of the lips; "Si Bai" refers to the white mucosal border surrounding the lips). Red and swollen lips indicate Damp-Heat in the Stomach. Bright red indicates Excess Fire. Pale white indicates Qi Deficiency. Pale white with a white halo around the edges indicates loss of Blood. Cyanotic/black indicates Cold. Cyanotic lips with a curled tongue, or lips turning dark/black with continuous trembling, are all fatal signs. Sores under the lips are named "Hu"; sores above the lips are named "Huo". Withered teeth indicate Kidney Heat. Dry anterior incisors indicate Summerheat (Zhong Shu).
