To treat forgetfulness caused by deficiency of Heart Qi, a poem states: Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), and Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) each three qian; Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) and Digupi (Lycii Cortex) in equal amounts; Fuling (Poria) doubled. Reciting ten thousand words daily leads to mental clarity. Formula composition: Guizhi, Yuanzhi, Renshen, Bajitian (Morindae Officinalis Radix), Shichangpu, Digupi (from *Suosui Lu*).
Jiang Yu, Magistrate of Songzi, had no other ailments but suddenly could not recognize characters for several years, only gradually recovering his old state later (from *Bitan*).
On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, take a spider web and place it in the collar of one's garment without letting others know; this prevents forgetfulness (from *Bencao*).
Qian Pi, Vice Minister, suddenly suffered from many nightmares at night; as soon as he lay down, dreams began, continuing all night long. Later, while traveling to take up an official post, he met Hu Yongzhi, Judicial Commissioner of Dengzhou, on the Han River. They stayed together in a postal station. He mentioned his recent frequent dreams, considering them an ill omen. Hu said, "I once experienced this too, with great fear. A Daoist priest taught me to wear Cinnabar. When I first served as Judicial Commissioner of Chenzhou, I obtained Lingsha (refined Cinnabar) made into double arrowhead shapes. Wearing it, efficacy was seen within ten days; for four or five years, I had no more dreams. I have kept it secret and cherished ever since." He then untied a crimson silk pouch from his hair bun and gave it to him. That very night, the nightmares ceased, and the spirit became tranquil. *Zhen Gao* and other Daoist texts repeatedly record that Cinnabar wards off evil; is this not true? (from *Leibian*).
Placing Shexiang (Moschus) in the pillow can eliminate nightmares (from *Wulei Xianggan Zhi*).
*Suwen* states: Why do some people suffer from Dianji (epilepsy/mental disorder) from birth? How is this known? Qibo replied: This disease is named Tai Bing (fetal disease). It arises when, during gestation, the mother suffers a great fright. The Qi ascends instead of descending, and Jingqi (Essence-Qi) gathers together, causing the child to develop Dianji (from *Yulan*).
How to distinguish between Dian (depressive psychosis) and Kuang (manic psychosis)? The answer is: At the onset of Kuang, there is little sleep, reduced appetite, arrogance, self-aggrandizement, inappropriate laughter, and excessive joy.
Dian patients lose their spiritual hold, speak confusedly; severely, they may climb high places and curse, or run wildly. Xian (epilepsy) patients fall to the ground upon attack, bite their tongues, foam at the mouth, and experience convulsions of hands and feet, sometimes making sounds like six domestic animals, recovering consciousness after a moment. Dian involves pathogenic factors entering Yin meridians; one theory states that Yang excess leads to Kuang; Dian involves pathogenic factors disturbing the Heart. Their prescriptions and medications are also similar.
Generally, those suffering from Dian or Kuang who shout and strike others have Heat in the Heart Meridian. One should use Zhenxin (calming the Heart) medicines combined with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to purge for several days, then administer Anshen (calming the Spirit) and Feng (wind-dispelling) medicines. Achieving tranquility constitutes peace and health. Do not use Wenbu (warming and tonifying) medicines just because the patient appears emaciated or has lost appetite; otherwise, the illness will surely recur. Take heed, take heed! Gradually regulate the diet (from *Yulan*).
When a person sleeps, the Hun and Po (ethereal and corporeal souls) wander outside. If oppressed by evil spirits (An), the spirit is constrained. Those with weak constitutions may remain unconscious for a long time, even to the point of Qi exhaustion. Therefore, assistance from bystanders to call out is necessary, along with medical arts. Calling softly and from a distance can bring revival (from *Jifeng Fang*).
