Take one *Mume Fructus* (Wumei, 乌梅), three *Phaseoli Semen* (Badou, 巴豆), and seven *Piperis Fructus* (Hujiao, 胡椒). Grind them finely into a paste. Mix with wine and vinegar, apply to the area below the umbilicus, and the infant will immediately separate from the mother and be born. (From *Suosui Lu*)
In cases of difficult labor, secretly write the name of the Prefect of the current province on clean paper, burn it to ash over a lamp, mix the ash with water, and drink it to induce delivery. Although this is a form of apotropaic magic, it is quite effective. (From *Baiyi Xuanfang*)
When a woman gives birth in cold months, cold pathogenic factors may enter the vaginal opening, causing distension and fullness below the umbilicus, making the area too painful to touch. This is Cold Colic (Han Han). A physician prepared to treat her with Didang Tang (Resisting Decoction), believing there was blood stasis. I instructed him: "This is not the correct treatment." She could take Zhang Zhongjing's Lamb Soup (Yangrou Tang), reducing the water amount by two parts, and after two doses, she recovered. (From *Bencao Yan Yi*)
A woman who had just given birth presented with headache and fever, or alternating chills and fever after one or two days. What is the explanation? There are three possibilities: first, milk engorgement (returning milk); second, failure of lochia (residual blood) to discharge; third, wind-cold invasion. First, press the breasts with your hand. If there is pain, it is milk engorgement. It is appropriate to administer Shunqi San (Regulating Qi Powder) or Trichosanthis Fructus powder to unblock the milk, and wash with warm water. Once the milk flows freely, there is no issue. If there is no pain, ask whether the lochia is discharging. If the lochia does not discharge, it is blood stasis. Immediately administer blood-invigorating medicines such as Heishen San (Black Divine Powder), Myrrha, and Angelicae Sinensis Radix. Since the breasts are not painful and the lochia is discharging spontaneously, yet the body is hot, with headache or alternating chills and fever, this is wind-cold invasion. Treat according to the methods of Shanghan Lun based on symptoms. (From *Yiyu*)
A woman suddenly suffered from extreme thirst, drinking only juice made of five flavors. The famous physician Geng Yu diagnosed her pulse and said: "This indicates that the blood is about to coagulate; it is not a disease, but rather pregnancy." Ancient formulas mention the symptom of "thirst due to impending blood coagulation, craving sour/flavorful drinks," which must be known. (From *Bencao*)
Tao Hongjing stated: To treat difficult labor, one can tie bowstrings around the waist or burn the arrowhead of a crossbow until red-hot and drink it in wine. Both methods aim at the meaning of release and speed. (From *Bencao*)
The Beauty of the King of Chuan was pregnant but had no lactation. She summoned Chunyu Yi. He gave her a pinch of Datura seeds (Gedang Yao) mixed with wine. Lactation resumed immediately. Chunyu Yi examined her pulse again and found it rapid and restless, indicating excess pathogenic factors. He then administered one he of Calcitum (Xiaoshi). Subsequently, she expelled five or six pieces of blood clots resembling beans. (From *Shiji*)
When a pregnant woman is about to deliver, if her abdomen refuses to relax and she walks bent over, lying down and enduring pain, it is because the fetus cannot turn within the womb, causing the feet to emerge first. This is called breech presentation (Ni Chan). If not rescued promptly, both mother and child will die. Use one shed skin of a black snake (Wushe Tui), two cicada sloughs (Chantui), and one tuft of hair from the infant's head (Xuyue). Burn these three ingredients to ash, divide into two doses, and mix with warm wine for oral administration. Take both doses simultaneously. Lie on the back for a moment, and the infant will immediately be born normally. Alternatively, prick the sole of the infant's foot with a small silk needle seven times. In urgent cases, apply a little salt to the pricked area, and the infant will immediately be born normally, saving both mother and child. (From *Liu Yingshu Yi Yuan*)
