When pustules on a child's face first begin to suppurate, they should be immediately moistened with pure butter (Su). Frequent application is best. As soon as scabs form, they must be peeled off immediately and then re-moistened. If the scabs are hard and do not fall off, they will hinder flesh regeneration, resulting in keloids (scar tissue). This principle is clear, yet many people do not understand it; instead, they mistakenly believe that early removal of scabs causes them, which is a significant error.
Children suffering from chickenpox or smallpox (Chuangzhen) must not wash their faces, as water entering the eyes can cause damage. Strict dietary restrictions are necessary: only porridge and foods such as crucian carp, blue fish, and quail are permitted. Other fish, as well as pork and mutton, must be avoided to prevent eye damage.
Once a child's condition is identified as involving Chuangzhen, before the lesions fully erupt, apply rouge around the eyes to prevent the pathogenic factors from invading the eyes. This is also a very effective method.
After all lesions of Chuangzhen have erupted, the body temperature has normalized, the child shows interest in food, and can move slightly, decoct Qingliang Yinzi (Cooling Drink) strongly. Administer an appropriate dose based on the child's age. After two or three bowel movements, the child will feel comfortable and peaceful. Subsequently, there will be no fever, no mumps-like swelling of the cheeks, no epistaxis, and no dysentery. Those who do not use this method may not be able to avoid these complications.
Dan Du (Erysipelas) in children is caused by the accumulation of wind-heat and toxic pathogens. It can result from wearing clothes heated by fire in winter without waiting for them to cool, covering the child too warmly at night, exposing the child to fire during the day, or nursing infants consuming roasted/moxa-treated foods or alcohol. Dan Du may appear on the hands and feet, or on the head, face, chest, and back. The heat feels like fire, and even light touch causes unbearable pain. The best treatment is immediate bloodletting using Bian stones (stone lancets). Oral remedies and Batang Tang (Bed Decoction) from *Qianjin Fang* (Thousand Gold Formulas) are also applicable. (All above from Li Zuosi's *Baosheng Yaofang*)
Infantile vomiting and diarrhea may develop into Slow Convulsion (Man Jing), characterized by lethargy and slight convulsions of the limbs. Take Jin Ye Dan (Golden Liquid Pill), half tael, and Bai Wan Zi (White Pills), 3 qian, grind them together into an extremely fine powder. Mix with ginger-infused rice water and administer 3 qian orally. Higher doses are more effective; administration up to one or two taels is harmless. Once stomach Qi recovers and the limbs gradually warm up, gradually decrease the dosage of Jin Ye Dan and increase Bai Wan Zi, adjusting according to clinical judgment.
For newborns who do not suckle breast milk and do not urinate initially, take 2 he of milk juice and 1 cun of green onion white (divided into four pieces). Boil in a silver or ceramic vessel until reduced to 1 he. Administer via a dropper/nasal tube for immediate cure. (From *Jiyan Fang*)
Newborns under one month old often cry excessively, causing bleeding from the umbilicus. Apply powder of Baishi Zhi (White Litharge) to the navel for immediate cure. If not cured, lightly roast the powder, let it cool, and reapply. Do not peel or disturb the wound.
Roast Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) until dry, grind into powder, and apply to the navel frequently for spontaneous recovery. My family's infant suffered from Umbilical Dampness (Qi Shi) with pus and clear fluid discharge for over fifty days; one application dried it out. Later, urine entered the wound causing recurrence, but it was healed again by application. (From *Liangfang*)
