Cui Wu, a resident of Dingzhou, fell from a horse and fractured his leg. The physician instructed him to take copper powder mixed with wine, after which he recovered completely. More than ten years after his death, during reburial, it was observed that the fracture site of his tibia was encased in copper powder. (From *Chaoye Qianzai*)
During the Xuanhe era of Emperor Huizong of Song, an imperial physician was suddenly summoned by an urgent messenger to treat a palace maid at a Buddhist temple, with orders to cure her on the same day. Upon arriving at the temple, the physician found it deserted. Shortly after, a maid was helped out of a sedan chair and delivered to the physician by the messenger. An imperial decree required a cure within the specified time. Upon examination, the physician found the maid in a state of coma. Inquiries made to her attendants revealed no knowledge of the cause of her illness; everyone was terrified and ashamed. After some time, several elderly palace maids arrived, dismounted, and wept around the sedan chair, revealing the truth: she had fallen to her death while swinging on a swing. The physician stated that traumatic injuries belong to surgery. He wished to report this but feared that delay might lead to unpredictable consequences. Re-examining her, he detected a faint pulse. Suddenly recalling *Suhe Xiang Wan* (Styrax Pill) in his medicine box, he hastily took half a liang (approx. 25g), roasted it over fire to remove Borneolum Syntheticum (Bingpian, 冰片) and Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), ground it with half a sheng (approx. 600ml) of wine, and administered it orally. By the third watch (11 PM - 1 AM), the patient began to groan; by the fifth watch (3 AM - 5 AM), she expelled several sheng of dark blood. After several days of recuperation, she recovered. I believe the immediate use of *Suhe Xiang Wan* was appropriate, as falling from a height inevitably involves fright and palpitations, leading to chaotic Qi and Blood. This medicine not only dispels blood stasis but also awakens the spirit and regulates Qi. The physician’s accidental use proved effective. Such medicines should never be lacking in the home; they are excellent prescriptions for rebellious Qi, evil influences, *Chuan Shi* (consumptive diseases like tuberculosis), heart pain, and epidemic febrile diseases, with detailed records available. It is best to prepare them oneself. (From *Benshi Fang*)
Daoist Zhan Zhiyong was from Xin Prefecture. Initially, he enlisted as a soldier in the cavalry at Zhenjiang. At age twenty-two, while practicing horsemanship, he fell from a horse and suffered a comminuted fracture of the right tibia into three pieces. He was in dire straits and near death. The military commander ordered him to be carried back to the camp for medical rescue. Physicians drilled out several inches of necrotic bone. Half a year later, he improved slightly and could walk slowly with a cane. New bone regenerated in the empty spaces, but the tendons of the foot remained contracted and unable to extend. Eventually discharged from military service, he became a beggar. Three years later, he met Daoist Zhu, who had also served in the military camp. Zhu asked, "Your injury has not healed; why did you not seek medical help initially?" Zhan replied, "I am so poor I have not a single coin; how could I afford treatment?" Zhu said, "It costs nothing. Just obtain a large bamboo tube about one chi (approx. 30cm) long, drill a hole in it, tie a rope, and hang it at your waist. Whenever you sit, place the tube on the ground and roll your foot over it. Do not worry about the duration; effectiveness will come with time." Zhan followed this advice. Within two days, he felt relief in his marrow and bones. Trying to forcefully extend his leg, he found significant improvement compared to usual. Within less than two months, the affected tendons fully relaxed, restoring his leg to its pre-fall condition. Previously, I saw Ding Zizhang make a rotating pedal for his diseased foot; the principle is identical, but this method is simpler and can be easily implemented even by those without resources.
