*Xu Soushen Ji* records: A person was able to drink two dou of tea. Suddenly, due to drinking several sheng in excess, he vomited an object resembling a cow's lung. When poured with tea, it held exactly two dou and two sheng; thus it was named "Hu Er Jia" (from *Feng Yan Jianwen Lu*).
*Tang Shu* records: Zhen Quan's younger brother, Zhen Liyan, was skilled in medicine. At that time, a nun named Minglü, over sixty years old, suffered from abdominal distension and emaciation for two years. Zhen Liyan examined her pulse and said, "There are parasites in the abdomen; this is likely caused by accidentally ingesting hair." He then prescribed Realgar. Shortly after, she vomited a snake the size of a human little finger, but without eyes. Burning it still emitted the smell of burnt hair, and her illness was cured.
*Yi Yuan* records: In the Yuanjia era, a man in Zhang'an developed a Jia disease after eating duck meat. His chest felt full, his face was red, and he could not eat. The doctor instructed him to consume Sorghum (*Sorghum bicolour*), after which he soon felt restless and vomited a duckling, complete with body, beak, and wings, except the left foot which was still attached to the previously eaten meat. The illness was thereby cured. *Zhi Guai* records: A person suffered from Jia disease, experiencing severe abdominal pain day and night. On his deathbed, he ordered his son to dissect his abdomen after his death. The son, unwilling to do so, disobeyed the order. Upon dissection, a copper wine ladle holding several he was found. Hua Tuo, hearing of this condition, analyzed it and administered herbs from his towel case into the ladle, which dissolved into liquid wine. (From *Taiping Yulan*, ibid.)
Jing Chen's eldest son, Gong, at seven years old, suddenly developed a swelling in his hypochondrium. Under the skin, a lump resembling a turtle was faintly visible, moving slightly, causing unbearable pulling pain. An itinerant physician from Gucheng Village, Dexing, named Hong Doufu, examined him and instructed him to buy fresh shrimp to make soup. Others suspected this was a forbidden food for sores/toxins, but the physician insisted on its consumption. Soon after eating, the abdominal pain ceased. The physician joyfully said, "This is truly Turtle Jia. I am testing it by catering to its desires." He then compounded a formula for treating Spleen and Stomach disorders, adding two qian of powdered Aconite (*Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*). After several doses, the lump dissipated. The illness recurred the following year, but treated similarly with tonification, it was ultimately eradicated (from *Leibian*).
"Turtle Jia" refers to an abdominal mass shaped like a turtle. It arises either from consuming turtle meat followed by cold exposure leading to indigestion, or from eating various meats followed by cold-induced transformation. All cases result from deficiency of Spleen and Stomach Qi, which fails to digest when exposed to cold. "Jia" implies "false," meaning it has form but can be moved. Once, a man and his servant both suffered from Turtle Jia. The servant died first, and upon dissecting his abdomen, a live white turtle was found. Someone riding a white horse came to view the turtle; horse urine fell onto the turtle, causing it to retract its head. Subsequently, pouring horse urine over it caused the turtle to dissolve into water. The master said, "My illness will now be cured," and consumed the liquid. Indeed, as predicted, he recovered (from *Chao Shi Bing Yuan*).
