Among my clan members, there was one who suffered from Huoluan (cholera-like syndrome with vomiting and diarrhea) to the point of extreme exhaustion. Suddenly, he developed Ke Ni (hiccups/eructation), and within half a day, his condition became critical. A guest mentioned a moxibustion method for treating Ke Ni, stating that for patients with Shanghan (cold damage disease) or chronic illnesses who develop Ke Ni, it is considered an ominous sign. When medicinal treatments fail, moxibustion will surely cure them. I therefore ordered moxibustion to be performed. As soon as the heat reached the skin, the Ke Ni subsided and stabilized.
During the Yuanfeng era, I served as the Jinglue Shi (Military Commissioner) of Yanzhou. A staff officer named Zhang Pingxu contracted Shanghan and was in a critical state. One day, during a gathering of officials, Chen Pingyu, the Tongpan (Assistant Administrator) of Yanzhou, suddenly reported that Zhang Pingxu was on his deathbed (indicated by placing cotton at the nose/mouth to check breath) and asked me to visit him. I asked why the situation had deteriorated so quickly, and he replied, "The Ke Ni is severe, and his Qi (vital energy) has failed to connect." I suddenly recalled the moxibustion method and instructed them to try it. Before a meal was finished, Pingyu returned joyfully, saying, "One application of moxibustion cured him." The method is as follows: Locate the point one finger-width below the nipple, directly vertical to it, in the depression between the ribs. For women, bend the nipple to measure; the level even with the nipple is the acupoint. Use moxa cones the size of a small bean, apply three Zhu (moxa cones). Men are treated on the left side, women on the right side. Only this single point is treated. Once the fire's heat reaches the skin, the patient recovers; if not, the case is likely incurable. (From *Liang Fang*)
Xu Dezhan taught that for those suffering from Bi Xie (epistaxis/nosebleed), one should urgently moxibustuate the point Wanwanzhong, located in the depression between the two tendons at the back of the neck at the hairline, applying three Zhu. The bleeding stops immediately. This is because blood enters the brain from here and flows into the nose. Even tying a string tightly around the back of the neck can sometimes stop nosebleeds, but this moxibustion method is undoubtedly decisive and effective. (Ibid.)
(For shoulder pain), depending on which side is affected, locate the point slightly near the posterior bone gap of the shoulder tip. Slightly raise the arm to find the depression at the joint of the bones, and apply five Zhu. I witnessed several people being cured after this treatment. After moxibustion, the neck would hurt severely for a long time before stabilizing, but the condition never recurred. My relative suffered from toothache; various treatments were ineffective, but using this method led to a cure. (Ibid.)
Cai Yuanchang, while serving as the Prefect of Kaifeng, was sitting at his desk handling affairs when he suddenly felt as if an insect was crawling from the sole of his foot up to his waist. He then dropped his brush and fainted, recovering only after a long time. His subordinates said that only Yu Shansheng could treat this illness. They hurriedly summoned him. Yu Shansheng said, "This is truly Hongxiangjiao (foot qi/jambs)," and stated that the treatment should involve moxibustion at Fengshi (GB31). He applied one Zhu. Cai Yuanchang calmly returned to normal. The next day, the illness returned. He called Yu again, who said, "To eradicate the root of the disease, five hundred moxa cones are necessary." Following this advice, five hundred Zhu were applied, and he was cured thereafter. My second brother, Wengan Gong, governed Gusu. Due to the imperial tour, official quarters were vacated, and he temporarily moved to Wuxian County. The county government was situated in a low, damp area. Soon, he suffered from Bi Tong (numbness and pain in the limbs) and spasms in the feet, which were unbearable. Medicinal treatments were ineffective. Therefore, he used the heard-of method of burning the acupoints Fengshi (GB31), Jianyu (LI15), and Quchi (LI11). He never suffered from this again. The monk Puqing suffered from this ailment for twenty years. Each attack occurred roughly every two months. Using this moxibustion method, applying twenty-one Zhu stopped the pain immediately. Many others have benefited from this method without number. (From *Yijian Zhi*)
