The *Bencao* (Compendium of Materia Medica/Pharmacopoeia) details cases where a single substance has multiple names, as recorded in the *Benjing* (Shennong Bencao Jing, The Divine Farmer's Materia Medica, the earliest extant Chinese pharmacopoeia). However, even commonly used daily medicines often have different names, making them difficult to identify and trace at a moment's notice. Here, I directly point out their names and elucidate them, hoping this will benefit future scholars.

The *Diwang Shiji* (Chronicle of Emperors and Kings) records: Taihao (Fuxi) drew the Eight Trigrams to categorize the emotions of all things. The Six Qi, Six Fu Organs, Five Zang Organs, Five Elements, Yin and Yang, Four Seasons, and the rising and falling of Water and Fire were given form. The principles of a hundred diseases were categorized. Thus, the Nine Needles were created. It is also said that the Yellow Emperor ordered Leigong and Qibo to teach the making of the Nine Needles. This marks the beginning of acupuncture and moxibustion.
Current physicians record acupuncture points by creating mannequins and marking the locations, known as Mingtang (Hall of Brightness). According to the preface to the *Bronze Figure Acupoint Diagram*: In the past, the Yellow Emperor asked Qibo about human meridians, exhausting the mysteries of blood vessels and varying according to Yin and Yang. They wrote down all their words and stored them in the Chamber of Golden Orchids. When Leigong came to ask questions, [the Emperor] sat in the Mingtang to instruct him. The Mingtang spoken of in later generations originates from this (from *Shiwu Jiyuan*).
Wang Zuan, a native of Hailing during the Song Dynasty, studied classical prescriptions in his youth and was particularly proficient in acupuncture and stone therapy. People near and far knew his great reputation. During the Yuanjia era of the Song Dynasty, the daughter of Zhang Fang in the county stayed overnight at the gate of the Guangling Temple at dusk. At night, a creature pretending to be her husband came. The girl was thus bewitched and fell ill. Wang Zuan treated her. Initially, he inserted one needle, and a badger walked out from under the girl's quilt. The illness was thereby cured (from Liu Yingshu's *Yi'an*).
