*Yi Yuan* records: During the Jin Dynasty, in Changshan County, a woman named Zhao Xuan's mother was pregnant as usual. However, her thigh itched, and scratching it formed a sore. The infant was born from this sore, and ultimately both mother and child were safe and sound (from *Taiping Yulan*).
In the Jiangzuo region, there was a merchant who had a sore on his left upper arm that resembled a human face, with no other discomfort. The merchant once jokingly dripped wine into its mouth, and the face would turn red; feeding it food allowed it to eat. If fed too much, the flesh of the merchant's arm would swell; if not fed, the entire arm would become numb and bi-syndrome (numbness and pain due to obstruction). A skilled physician advised him to try various medicines one by one. After trying all kinds of herbs and other substances without adverse reactions, when he used Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母), the sore furrowed its brows and closed its mouth. The merchant rejoiced, saying, "This medicine can cure it." He then used a small reed tube to pry open its mouth and administer the drug. After several days, a scab formed, and the disease healed. However, the nature of this disease remains unknown (from *Benshi Fang*).
In an inn in Jiangnan, an old woman ate but never felt full. When Xu Dezhao passed through the inn, the old woman complained of hunger to him. Her son felt ashamed and offered steamed buns to Xu Dezhao. Xu finished a whole bamboo basket (about one hundred buns) yet still claimed to be endlessly hungry. He ate about one shi (a unit of volume/weight) of rice per day, which was immediately excreted, leaving the hunger unchanged. Cai Sheng, the chief clerk of Liquan County in Jingzhao Prefecture, was a friend who also suffered from this excessive hunger disorder. Whenever he felt hungry, he had to eat immediately; otherwise, he would collapse and faint. He always kept biscuits in his bosom. Even when facing high-ranking officials, he would eat immediately upon feeling hungry. Cai Sheng had excellent conduct, was learned and literary, and was a renowned figure of his time, but unfortunately died because of this condition, as no one could identify his illness. People often mourned for him (from *Mengxi Bitan*).
Scholar Fu suddenly contracted a disease of intestinal itching. At its worst, he would often laugh uncontrollably in front of others, laughing incessantly. This was a disease unheard of by ancient people (from *Dunzhai Xianlan*).
A person surnamed Wang in Fenzhou suffered from a disease where sounds like croaking frogs emanated from his right hypochondrium. He constantly desired to press the area with his hand; otherwise, the sounds would continue incessantly. Many physicians could not diagnose it. Hearing that Zhao Luan, a recluse from Jinyang, was skilled in pulse diagnosis, Zhao Luan said, "This is caused by shock qi entering the zang-fu organs and failing to heal, resulting in pathology, hence the constant sounds." Mr. Wang explained, "While traveling near the border waters, a large frog leaped several feet high and made a loud noise. I was startled and cried out, feeling pulling pain in my right hypochondrium. Since then, the sound has resembled a frog." Zhao Luan prescribed Liushen Dan (Six Spirits Pill) for him. The next day, he expelled green phlegm resembling frog skin, and he recovered. Zhao Luan stated that the pulse diagnosis of Mr. Wang showed a hidden and knotted pulse at the right Guan position, indicating a Ji accumulation disease (mass/accumulation). Therefore, it was treated solely as an accumulation disease, using Liushen Dan to purge it, leading to recovery (from *Mingyi Lu*).
