There are three treatises, twenty-eight prescriptions, and twenty acupuncture and moxibustion methods.
The treatise states: Whenever one encounters epidemic febrile diseases (Yi Xing Re Bing), it is highly likely that internal stasis will lead to jaundice. Simply use Gua Ding San (Melon Seed Powder) insufflated into the nasal cavity to allow yellow fluid to discharge, after which the patient will recover. Jaundice will not recur subsequently. One must always be vigilant in monitoring; if the patient's limbs, body, and face show a slight yellowish hue, Gua Ding San must be employed immediately. Do not allow the condition to spread or delay treatment; failure to monitor properly will inevitably lead to critical danger. Alcohol and wheat-based foods are strictly contraindicated; violation of this rule may result in death.
For treating jaundice where yellowness of the eyes persists, the prescription for Gua Ding San (Melon Seed Powder) is as follows:
Grind Gua Ding (Citrulli Semen, 瓜丁) into fine powder. Take an amount equivalent to one large soybean, insufflate it into the nasal cavity, and instruct the patient to inhale deeply. Once yellow water discharges, the disease will heal.
When a person suddenly experiences chills without cause, followed by yellowing of the skin, with the skin appearing dry and yellow like dust, scanty dark urine, occasional constipation, yet normal strength and appetite, having already taken various decoctions without eliminating residual heat, and suffering from chronic jaundice, Ku Shen San (Sophora Root Powder) should be used. The prescription is as follows:
Ku Shen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis, 苦参), Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 黄连), Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri, 黄柏), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 黄芩), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 大黄), Gua Ding (Citrulli Semen, 瓜丁), Ting Li (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae, 葶苈) [stir-fried, each 1 liang].
Crush and sieve these seven ingredients into a powder. Administer one fang cun bi (a square-inch measure) with water. It should induce profuse vomiting; those who vomit take it once daily. Those who do not vomit take it twice daily; it may also induce purgation. After five days of medication, if there is improvement, adjust accordingly; if no improvement, continue administration.
For treating jaundice where the urine color is unchanged, there is a tendency toward spontaneous diarrhea, abdominal fullness, and wheezing, heat-clearing is contraindicated. Clearing heat will inevitably cause hiccups (Yue).
Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, 半夏) (1 sheng, washed to remove slipperiness), Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 生姜) (0.5 jin).
Chop these two ingredients. Boil in 1 dou of water until 2 sheng remains. Divide into two doses. (Another method: boil in 7 sheng of water until 1.5 sheng remains.)
For treating jaundice where both the body and eyes are yellow, and the skin and flesh appear dry and yellow like dust:
Yin Chen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae, 茵陈) (one handful, chopped), Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae, 栀子仁) (24 seeds), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏) (1 jin).
Boil the first two ingredients in 5 sheng of water until 2.5 sheng remains. Strain. Heat Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 石膏) red-hot in a strong fire and plunge it into the decoction. Wait for the boiling to subside, then administer 1 sheng. Cover the patient to induce sweating. Dust the entire body with powder. If sweating does not occur, administer again.
For treating jaundice with abdominal fullness, difficult and dark urination, and spontaneous sweating: This indicates the exterior is harmonized but the interior is excess. Purging is indicated. Da Huang Tang (Rhubarb Decoction) is suitable. The prescription is as follows:
Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 大黄), Huang Bai (Cortex Phellodendri, 黄柏), Xiao Shi (Natrii Sulfas, 硝石) (each 4 liang), Zhi Zi (Fructus Gardeniae, 栀子) (15 seeds, broken open).
Chop these four ingredients. Boil in 6 sheng of water until 2 sheng remains. Strain. Add Xiao Shi (Natrii Sulfas, 硝石) and boil until 1 sheng remains. Take on an empty stomach in one dose.
