Commentary by Hua Tuo on the Biography of Cang Gong (Appendix)
Cheng, the Attendant Physician of Qi, claimed to suffer from headache. Chen Yi (Chunyu Yi) examined his pulse and stated, "Your condition is severe and difficult to describe." He then exited and privately told Cheng's younger brother, Chang, "This is a *Ju* (carbuncle/ulcer) disease, originating internally between the stomach and intestines. In five days, an abscess will swell; in eight days, vomiting of pus will occur, leading to death. Cheng's illness resulted from drinking alcohol and engaging in sexual activity." Cheng indeed died as predicted.
Since Cheng's *Ju* had already manifested in the stomach and intestines, it could have been treated by surgical incision and cleansing, rather than waiting for the abscess to swell and pus to vomit. Although the heat ascended to熏 (moxa/burn) the Yangming Meridian, corroding the collateral vessels and causing headache, was there no medicinal remedy? Moreover, at that time, the *Ju* had not yet fully formed, and the abscess had not erupted. Removing the necrotic tissue would have prevented future complications. Alas, Cheng failed to encounter a skilled physician. (Commentary by Hua Tuo)
