The nature of Zanthoxylum (Huajiao, 花椒) is endowed with the Five Elements (Wu Xing, 五行), and its characteristics correspond to the Six Meanings. Its leaves are green, corresponding to Jia-Yi (Wood); its peel is red, corresponding to Bing-Ding (Fire); its flowers are yellow, corresponding to Wu-Ji (Earth); its membrane is white, corresponding to Geng-Xin (Metal); and its fruit's substance corresponds to the Kan direction (Water). Its heat does not merely steam; it warms up to the Dantian (Lower Elixir Field, 丹田), extends laterally through the blood vessels, and centrally assists the True Yuan (Original Qi, 真元). It can also eliminate the toxicity of wine and food, ward off warm pathogenic factors, harmonize the Five Viscera (Zang Organs, 五脏), and regulate the Sanjiao (Triple Burner, 三焦). Among Yang herbs, its efficacy is incomparable.
For each batch, select one jin (approx. 500g) of Sichuan pepper from Jinzhou. Pick out the clean ones, removing the seeds (Jiaomu, 椒目) and those that are closed. Stir-fry them thoroughly in a pan or small pot. Lay two layers of paper on the ground, place the pepper on top, cover tightly with a new basin, and bake around the edges with yellow earth for about half a day. The toxicity will transform into sweat. Take it out, dry it in the sun, and lightly pound it in a wooden mortar. Take four to five liang (approx. 150-200g) of the red peel, then pound it into powder in an iron mortar. Form pills using wood honey as a binder, sized like paulownia seeds. Once dried, store in a gauze bag and hang in a ventilated place. Take ten to fifteen pills daily on an empty stomach, with tea or wine as desired. After half a year, increase to twenty pills; after one year, increase to twenty-five pills. There are no dietary restrictions.
There is also a song saying: This pepper corresponds to the Five Elements, and its kernel communicates the Six Meanings. If you wish to know the initial efficacy, do not rise at night [as sweat will appear]. Within six months of taking it, sweat flows from the soles of the feet like water; throughout the four seasons, vexation and fatigue are removed, and the Five Viscera are free from wind pathogens; eyesight is brightened, waist pain ceases, the body feels light, and the mind is healthy with good memory. Furthermore, there are other miraculous abilities: after three years, essence is naturally preserved, complexion resembles that of a child, spirit is refreshed, and sleep is reduced. Simply take this divine remedy, and malaria for life will cease. If taken with sincere devotion, the Three Corpses (San Shi, 三尸 - parasitic entities causing illness/decay) will naturally be abandoned. Nine types of insects will each avoid it. If you encounter such a person, record this meaning in the first book. Although you have not met an immortal, the initial connection has found its ground.
Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) turns into gold over a thousand years; consumption is best practiced by true men. This method is subtle and not transmitted to the mundane world. Now, only this prescription is recorded. Long-term consumption makes the body light, boosts Qi, enhances luster and complexion, removes the Three Corpses, wards off hundred toxins, distances from epidemics, calms the heart-mind, and possesses extraordinary merits that are difficult to fully describe. Select realgar that is the color of a rooster's comb blood, without sand or stone impurities, in any amount. Pound and sieve until fine, mix with Pine Resin (Songzhi, 松脂), and pound into pills the size of a bullet. Each morning, dissolve one pill in wine and take it. After ten days of consumption, the Three Corpses and hundred worms in the abdomen will ascend from below and be expelled, all purple-black matter removed. After one month of removal, hundred diseases will heal spontaneously, ears and eyes become clear, and long-term consumption can lead to becoming an immortal. One must remain clean to preserve the medicinal power, which is especially excellent.
The method for refining Pine Resin: Use lye from mulch wood ash. Place the pine resin in a pot or earthenware vessel with the lye. Refine until it becomes liquid. Filter the lye through millet bran. Use the finest part, which should be white as snow. If not refined enough, repeat the process according to the previous method. Mix with the aforementioned medicine and take when evenly blended.
