I studied under Master Li Dongyuan. The Master imparted to me the essential principles of the *Neijing* (Inner Canon), and further taught me the methods of formulating prescriptions. During the summer of the Xinyou year in the Zhongtong era, Dong Gong Yanming, Left Vice Director of the Secretariat, led troops to attack Jinan. At that time, the summer heat was intense. Soldiers drank cold beverages, and many developed dysentery. Additionally, a seasonal epidemic was prevalent. The Vice Director sent someone to seek my medical assistance, so I provided him with several prescriptions. By autumn, when the city fell, the Duke returned and said to me, "The prescriptions you previously gave were mostly effective. Were these formulas self-created by you, or ancient ones?" I replied, "There are both self-created formulas and ancient ones." The Duke said, "Your use of medicine is so skillful; you can be said to have grasped the essence of medicine. It would be beneficial to categorize and compile those self-created and ancient formulas that have proven effective through experience, to aid people. Would this not be good?" I agreed. All famous ancient and modern formulas that I had personally found effective were categorized into a book, detailed below.
The *Bilun* (Treatise on Bi Syndrome) states: "When Yin Qi is quiet, the Spirit is stored; when agitated, it dissipates and perishes. If food and drink double in quantity, the intestines and stomach are injured." This means that food should not focus on abundance but on moderation. This preserves the harmonious state and allows for nourishment and longevity. If one greedily seeks fullness, causing food stagnation and difficulty in digestion, it merely accumulates hidden damage, thereby inviting disease. Generally, eating until overly full consumes Qi through various pathways: some may vomit due to indigestion, consuming the vital source; some may generate phlegm from undigested fluids, consuming spirit water through coughing and spitting; frequent diarrhea depletes the transformation and generation of grain Qi; slippery and turbid urination depletes the moistening power of the source. Even clear and cold semen leaking downward, or profuse sweating leaking outward, all stem from excessive injury from food and overly rich flavors. If one can moderate satisfying meals and reduce palatable tastes, often avoiding overeating, then every meal will cause no harm, and every food item will be beneficial. Waste changes normally, morning and evening urination and defecation occur on schedule, essence and Qi condense harmoniously, fluids above and below are retained, the Spirit is stored internally, Ying and Wei are secured externally, pathogenic toxins cannot invade, and diseases have no origin. Thus, the Sages established words and teachings as the great canon of health preservation.
It is stated: Human life depends on the essence of the five grains and the preparation of the five flavors, which generate the physical form. The Classics say: "Flavors return to the form." If flavors are harmed, they can also damage the form. Now, diet exceeds moderation, causing the intestines and stomach to be unable to bear it, and Qi fails to transform, resulting in injury. The Classics say: "Blazing fire consumes Qi; Qi feeds the mild fire. Blazing fire scatters Qi; mild fire generates Qi." The *Bilun* says: "If food and drink double in quantity, the intestines and stomach are injured." Losing the regulation of the four seasons leads to disease. The Classics say: "A tight and full pulse at the Qi Kou indicates injury from food. The chest and stomach feel full, and there is no taste in the mouth." The mouth and Qi Kou are connected. Qi Kou is also called Kun Kou, representing the Spleen. Therefore, when the Stomach is injured, the Qi Kou pulse is tight and full. Injuries vary in degree. If the Qi Kou pulse is twice as strong as the Cun Kou pulse, and the pulse beats six times per breath cycle, it indicates injury to the Jueyin channel, which is a mild injury. Formulas like Zhizhu Wan (Immature Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Pill) are indicated. If the Qi Kou pulse is three times as strong, and the pulse beats seven times, it indicates injury to the Shaoyin channel, which is a severe injury. Formulas like Xionghuang Shengbing Zi (Realgar Holy Cake), Muxiang Binglang Wan (Costus and Areca Nut Pill), and Zhike Wan (Citrus Aurantium Pill) are indicated. If the Qi Kou pulse is four times as strong, and the pulse beats eight to nine times, it indicates injury to the Taiyin channel. The chest and epigastrium feel stuffed and confused, with severe pain in the heart and stomach. Formulas like Beijie Wan (Emergency Preparation Pill), Shenbao Wan (Divine Treasure Pill), and Xiaoji Wan (Eliminate Accumulation Pill) are indicated. Feeling nauseous and wanting to vomit is commonly known as "food dizziness" (Shi Mi Feng). The Classics say: "If there is a pulse in the upper part but none in the lower part, the person should vomit; if they do not vomit, death ensues." Guadisan (Melon Pedicel Powder) should be used to induce vomiting. If vomiting cannot be induced, there is no treatment. The Classics say: "For pathogens high up, induce emesis; for those low down, drain them thoroughly."
