In the year of Guichou, I was summoned by imperial decree to travel to Liupan Mountain. The Emperor ordered me to treat Huo'erchi Niulin, who suffered from chronic hernia (Shanqi). His condition had been exacerbated by irregular meals, overwork during the seventh month, and excessive consumption of dairy products, causing symptoms as severe as the initial onset. His complexion was sallow and dull, with paroxysmal pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, unbearable spasmodic cramping, an inability to straighten his waist, slight relief upon application of heat, and a pulse that was fine, small, and rapid.
Reflecting on the *Nan Jing* (Classic of Difficult Issues), which states: "When the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) is diseased, men develop internal binding of the seven types of hernias, all caused by cold accumulation between the Small Intestine," I concluded that only a formula of great heat could effect a cure. Thus, I prepared this prescription.
[Chenxiang Guifu Wan (Agarwood, Cinnamon Twig, and Aconite Pill)] treats deficiency of Middle Qi, deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, poor appetite, disharmony of Qi, retreating Yin and assisting Yang, eliminating accumulated cold from the Zang-Fu organs, pain in the heart and abdomen, distension of the hypochondrium, borborygmus in the abdomen, lackluster complexion, coldness of the hands and feet, and uncontrolled diarrhea or urinary incontinence. It also treats deficiency-Yang of the Lower Jiao and the seven types of hernias, where pain radiates to the lower abdomen making it unbearable, the waist is bent and cannot be straightened, and relief is found with hot compresses.
Ingredients: Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, skin and bud removed), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix, processed, skin and bud removed, cut into small pieces), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed), Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, stir-fried), Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried), Guanchi (Cinnamomi Cortex), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, each 1 liang, soaked in decoction to remove bitterness).
Process the above ingredients into powder, bind with vinegar paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 50 to 70-80 pills per dose, swallowed with hot rice water. Swallowing with warm wine is also acceptable. Take on an empty stomach before meals, twice daily. Avoid cold foods.
[Tiantai Wuyao San (Tiantai Lindera Powder)] treats Small Intestine hernia, with pain radiating to the umbilical and abdominal regions.
Ingredients: Wuyao (Linderae Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried), Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, stir-fried), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, white pith removed, each 5 qian), Binglang (Arecae Semen, crushed, 2 pieces), Chuanlian (Meliae Fructus, 10 pieces), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 14 pieces, slightly broken, stir-fried together with Chuanlian using wheat bran; when the bran turns black, discard the bran and Badou, retaining only the Chuanlian).
Process the above ingredients into powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine. For severe pain, mixing with stir-fried ginger and hot wine is also effective. After taking these two medicines, recovery was achieved within ten days. In the autumn of the following year, when Wang Zheng returned from campaign, he came to pay respects from afar. His spirit remained vigorous. The Emperor was greatly pleased, and this case is recorded here.
