In the year Guichou, I accompanied Mr. Dou Zisheng and the Imperial Court to spend the winter in the Guhudu region. During our discussions with the Master, I had the opportunity to view the *Liuzhu Zhiyao Fu* (Ode on Key Points of Meridian Flow) and the techniques of tonification and sedation.
Applying these methods yielded significant effects. I now record them here so that the Master's Way may not perish. Here is the preface to the *Ode on Key Points of Meridian Flow*:
Through observation, listening/smelling, inquiry, and palpation (Wang, Wen, Wen, Qie), one can understand the source of disease. Through tonification, sedation, Ying (meeting the path of Qi), and Sui (following the path of Qi), the essentials of acupuncture are revealed. Since then, I have studied this until today. Although I often pondered deeply to explore its subtleties, I failed to grasp its profound mysteries. One day, during a break from transmitting classics, I received instructions from my father-in-law. He spoke of worldly chaos, dominated by war. People's spirits lacked foundation and hearts were unsettled; or when disease becomes severe, essence is depleted and Qi weakens. Furthermore, due to wars, nations are isolated, and medical supplies are cut off from merchants. Even if there are effective prescriptions, they cannot be sought in markets. It is better than the efficacy of Bian stones (ancient surgical tools), which can immediately resolve disease conditions. Thus, I accepted instruction and diligently sought a teacher. For seventeen years, I studied cautiously, yet few understood. Later, while taking refuge in Caiyi, I finally received the secret teachings from Master Li. This man used acupuncture to save people from illness, eliminating pain before their eyes and curing consumption diseases under his fingers. Truly, he was like a drawn bow ready to shoot, responding as quickly as releasing the trigger—ten thousand attempts, ten thousand successes; a hundred shots, a hundred hits. Adding to this was his compassion for life and his lack of greed for profit. He once told me: "Precious treasures are not leaked to unworthy persons; the Sacred Dao must be passed to the worthy." Presuming myself unworthy, I made humble requests, and received his sincere, unreserved kindness. He taught me forty-three secret acupoints. Among thousands of treatments, not one failed to cure. Thus, I engraved them in my heart and marrow, striving to rescue those in distress and danger. Thereafter, removing pain was swift as picking something up with hands, breaking accumulations dispersed like melting ice. Acupuncture, indeed, is miraculous! However, considering that these acupoints might be forgotten, using rhyme makes them easier to remember. Therefore, I composed this ode in verse. How dare I keep it private? I hope to transmit it to like-minded individuals. Respectfully inscribed two days before the Double Ninth Festival in the year Renchen.
To treat disease effectively, nothing surpasses acupuncture. Skillfully operating the divine mechanism, the practitioner opens the profound principles of the sages. Externally utilizing Bian needles, one can eliminate evil and support righteousness. Internally containing Water and Fire, one is good at restoring Yang and reversing Yin.
Tracing back to the origin, collaterals branch differently, meridians interlace. Some differ like ditches, ponds, streams, and valleys; some share gaps like mountains, seas, and hills. These lineages are hard to fathom, but have unity in their guidelines. The principles are complex and profound; what is the merit of tonification and sedation? The methods are swift and clear, derived naturally from Ying and Sui.
For example, difficulty walking: Taichong (LR3) is most remarkable. (Taichong belongs to the Liver Meridian, located 2 cun posterior to the junction of the first and second metatarsal bones, or 1.5 cun in the pulsating artery.) Renzhong (GV26) eliminates stiffness and pain of the spine. (Renzhong belongs to the Du Meridian, also known as Shuigou, located below the philtrum.) Shenmen (HT7) removes mental dullness. (Shenmen belongs to the Heart Meridian, also known as Ruizhong or Zhongdu, located in the depression at the radial end of the wrist crease.) Wind injuring the neck causing stiffness: seek Fengfu (GV16). (Fengfu belongs to the Du Meridian, entering the nape hairline 1 cun, 1.5 cun posterior to Naohu, in the depression between the large tendons of the neck.) Dizziness and vertigo: seek Fengchi (GB20). (Fengchi belongs to the Gallbladder Meridian, located in the depression posterior to the temporal hairline.) Ear blockage requiring hearing restoration: treat with Tinghui (GB2). (Tinghui belongs to the Gallbladder Meridian, located in the depression anterior to the ear, opening a hole when the mouth is open.) Eye pain: push with Hegu (LI4). (Hegu belongs to the Large Intestine Meridian, also known as Hukou, located between the bones of the thumb and index finger.) Chest stagnation and yellow complexion: take Yongquan (KI1) for relief. (Yongquan belongs to the Kidney Meridian, also known as Dizhong, located in the depression of the sole of the foot, in the depression when toes are curled.) Brain dizziness and red eyes: drain Cuanzhu (BL2) as appropriate. (Cuanzhu belongs to the Bladder Meridian, located in the depression at the medial end of the eyebrow.) If both elbows are contracted: rely on Quchi (LI11) to smooth. (Quchi belongs to the Large Intestine Meridian, located between the two bones when the elbow is flexed, lateral to the olecranon.) Limb flaccidity: rely on Zhaohai (KI6) to eliminate. (Zhaohai belongs to the Kidney Meridian, located below the medial malleolus, governed by the Yin Qiao vessel.) Toothache: Lvxi (BL67/Taixi) is suitable for treatment. (Lvxi belongs to the Bladder Meridian, also known as Taixi.) Neck stiffness: Chengjiang (CV24) can protect. (Chengjiang belongs to the Ren Meridian, located in the depression below the lower lip.) Taibai (SP3) promotes Qi flow. (Taibai belongs to the Spleen Meridian, located in the depression below the medial eminence of the first metatarsal bone, treating abdominal distension.) Yinlingquan (SP9) opens water pathways. (Yinlingquan belongs to the Spleen Meridian, located in the depression below the medial condyle of the tibia, treating dysuria.) Abdominal distension: seize Neiting (ST44) without delay. (Neiting belongs to the Stomach Meridian, located in the depression between the second and third toes.) Muscle spasms and pain: drain Chengshan (BL57) early. (Chengshan belongs to the Bladder Meridian, located in the depression between the bellies of the gastrocnemius muscles.) Generally, ankle pain: Kunlun (BL60) resolves it. (Kunlun belongs to the Bladder Meridian, located in the depression posterior to the lateral malleolus and superior to the calcaneus.) Thigh and knee pain: Ynshi (ST32) can cure. (Ynshi belongs to the Stomach Meridian, located in the depression 3 cun above the patella, below Futu.) Epilepsy and mania: rely on Houxi (SI3) for therapy. (Houxi belongs to the Small Intestine Meridian, located in the depression posterior to the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint on the ulnar side.) Malaria with chills and fever: rely on Jianshi (PC5) for support. (Jianshi belongs to the Pericardium Meridian, located 3 cun proximal to the palmar crease, between the two tendons.) Qimen (LR14) resolves chest fullness and blood distension. (Qimen belongs to the Liver Meridian, located 1.5 cun lateral to Taichong, directly below the second rib at the nipple.) Laogong (PC8) retreats stomach reflux and heart pain without doubt. (Laogong belongs to the Pericardium Meridian, located in the center of the palm, taken when the ring finger is flexed.) Examining Dadun (LR1) removes hernias and testicular swelling, as stated by King Gong. (Dadun belongs to the Liver Meridian, located at the tip of the big toe, about the width of a leek leaf from the nail.) Zusanli (ST36) eliminates emaciation from five consumptions, as said by Elder Hua. (Zusanli belongs to the Stomach Meridian, located 3 cun below the knee, in the depression lateral to the tibia and medial to the tendon.) Indeed, Wangu (SI4) dispels jaundice. (Wangu belongs to the Small Intestine Meridian, located in the depression distal to the styloid process of the pisiform bone on the ulnar side.) RanGu (KI2) drains the Kidney. (RanGu belongs to the Kidney Meridian, located in the depression anterior and inferior to the medial malleolus.) Xingjian (LR2) treats knee swelling and lower back pain. (Xingjian belongs to the Liver Meridian, located in the depression where the pulse is felt between the first and second metatarsal bones.) Chize (LU5) removes elbow pain and tight tendons. (Chize belongs to the Lung Meridian, located on the cubital crease.) Dim vision: Erjian (LI2) should be taken. (Erjian belongs to the Large Intestine Meridian, located in the depression on the radial side of the index finger, proximal to the metacarpophalangeal joint.) Nasal obstruction and loss of smell: Yingxiang (LI20) can guide. (Yingxiang belongs to the Large Intestine Meridian, located beside the nostril, level with the alar nasi.) Jianjing (GB21) removes unbearable damp-pain in both arms. (Jianjing belongs to the Gallbladder Meridian, located in the depression on the shoulder, anterior to the acromion and superior to the supraclavicular fossa; press with three fingers, the depression under the middle finger is the point.) Sizhukong (TE23) treats unbearable unilateral headache. (Sizhukong belongs to the Sanjiao Meridian, located in the depression posterior to the eyebrow.) Cough with cold phlegm: Lieque (LU7) is reliable. (Lieque belongs to the Lung Meridian, located 1.5 cun proximal to the radial styloid process.) Ocular discharge and cold tears: Linqi (GB15) is accurate. (Linqi belongs to the Gallbladder Meridian, 5 cun vertically into the hairline from the midpoint of the eyebrow.) Huagu (BL54?) removes residual leg pain. (Huagu belongs to the Bladder Meridian, located on the femur/tibia area - *Note: Text says 'tui yan gu', likely referring to a specific point on the leg, possibly Huantiao GB30 or similar, but text explicitly says Huagu*). Shenshu (BL23) drains lower back pain. (Shenshu belongs to the Bladder Meridian, located 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the second lumbar vertebra.) From this we see Yuèrén (Bian Que) treating corpse-like fainting at Weihui (GV16/Du Mai intersection), recovering instantly. Wenbo draining dead fetus at Yinjiao (CV7), falling immediately upon needling. (Sanyinjiao SP6 belongs to the Spleen Meridian, located 3 cun superior to the tip of the medial malleolus, in the depression behind the tibia.) It is said that all pain is Excess, but numbness is Deficiency. Excess enters from outside; Deficiency exits from inside. Therefore, nourish the Mother to supplement deficiency, reduce the Child to balance excess. Observe the twenty-seven meridians, distinguishing each clearly. According to the four hundred and four diseases, remove each item. Thus avoiding premature death, bringing people to an age of longevity. Subtle distinctions clarify ancient mysterious texts. Also heard: Heart and chest diseases seek Daling (PC7) behind the palm. (Daling belongs to the Pericardium Meridian, located in the depression between the two tendons at the wrist crease.) Shoulder and back pain blame Shousanli (LI10) in front of the elbow. (Shousanli belongs to the Large Intestine Meridian, located 2 cun distal to Quchi.) Cold bi syndrome and kidney failure: take Earth of Foot-Yangming (Zusanli ST36). Abdominal pain connected to the navel: drain Water of Foot-Shaoyin (Yingu KI10). Pain in the spine behind the heart: needle Zhongzhu (TE3) for immediate recovery. (Zhongzhu belongs to the Sanjiao Meridian, located between the bases of the fourth and fifth metacarpal bones.) Pain in the hypochondrium and ribs: puncture Yanglingquan (GB34) to stop immediately. (Yanglingquan belongs to the Gallbladder Meridian, located 1 cun inferior and anterior to the head of the fibula.) Head and neck pain: use Houxi (SI3) for peace. (Houxi belongs to the Small Intestine Meridian, located in the depression posterior to the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint on the ulnar side.) Lower back and leg pain: only Weizhong (BL40) suffices. (Weizhong belongs to the Bladder Meridian, located in the center of the popliteal crease, in the depression of the arterial pulse.) Practitioners of acupuncture, if they can understand these principles, will achieve the merit of expelling evil through mere finger movements.
