Fetal measles (measles contracted in the fetal period) that appears and disappears immediately upon the onset of fever is caused by Wind-Cold pathogenic factors. It is appropriate to use herbs that cool the Blood, disperse Wind, and resolve phlegm. If the rash fails to erupt fully, it is also due to the abundance of Wind-Cold pathogens or premature menstruation; rapid dispersal and resolution are required. Although this is fetal measles, precautions must still be observed.
Postpartum treatment primarily focuses on greatly tonifying Qi and Blood. However, if measles occur, tonification should not be administered abruptly. If high fever follows, dispersing methods are not contraindicated. Shengma Gegen Tang (Cimicifugae et Puerariae Decoction) should be used, with Chao Baishao (Stir-fried White Peony Root), Ziye (Perilla Leaf), and Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) added internally to induce sweating; once sweat is produced, the rash will emerge. For all ascending and dispersing herbs, cold-natured herbs should not be combined, so that toxins can exit easily without causing subsequent complications.
Ancient texts state that "Ma" (smallpox/measles) refers to "Zhen" (measles). Measles resemble hemp seeds in clusters, while smallpox resembles beans in grains; both are named according to their shapes. The fetal toxin is the same, but smallpox originates from the Zang organs. The Zang belong to Yin, and Yin governs Blood; therefore, smallpox has form and pus, and symptoms include both chills and fever. Measles originate from the Fu organs. The Fu belong to Yang, and Yang governs Qi; therefore, measles have form but no pus, and symptoms are mostly heat without chills. Since the symptoms differ, the treatment methods also differ. Smallpox benefits from internal consolidation and can use tonic formulas; measles contraindicate internal consolidation and only require dispersal and resolution. Only the initial stage of fever involves similar exterior-releasing methods. After eruption, smallpox requires tonifying Qi to generate Blood, whereas measles require tonifying Yin to restrain Yang. Why? Because when measles heat is severe, the Yin aspect suffers from scorching, leading to significant depletion of Blood. Therefore, treatment focuses on clearing fire and nourishing Yin, without disturbing Qi. Harsh and drying agents should be strictly avoided from beginning to end. The world knows smallpox is serious, but does not realize that measles are even more lethal. Medical books often neglect this, which is lamentable.
1. At the initial stage of measles fever, symptoms often resemble Taiyang disease (exposure to cold). However, measles are distinguished by coughing, sneezing, clear nasal discharge, swollen eyelids, tearing, facial edema, red cheeks, nausea, and dry retching. Upon observing these signs, it is measles. One must carefully avoid Wind and Cold, abstain from rich meat and strong flavors, and use medication to release the exterior. This opens the skin and unblocks the Couli (interstices), allowing the toxic rash to emerge easily.
1. Although the eruption of measles is attributed to fetal toxin, it invariably arises from epidemic pestilential Qi. Therefore, when using dispersing medications, one must first understand the seasonal Qi. If the season is warm, use acrid-cool herbs for dispersal, such as Fangfeng Jiedu Tang (Saposhnikoviae and Detoxification Decoction). If the weather is hot, use acrid-cold herbs, such as Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis and Detoxification Decoction). In extreme cold, use acrid-warm herbs, such as Guizhi Jiedu Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Detoxification Decoction). When cold and warmth alternate, use acrid-neutral herbs, such as Shengma Jiedu Tang (Cimicifugae and Detoxification Decoction). This is adapting medication to the times; do not mistake it for Taiyang disease and mistakenly apply sweating or purging methods, which would damage the Harmony of Heaven. Also, assess the patient's deficiency or excess. If there is constipation, intense irritability and heat, and the rash fails to erupt, use wine-processed Dahuang (Rhubarb) to mildly purge. If ineffective, use Ginseng-type tonics. The Classics state: Do not make the deficient more deficient, nor the excess more excess. Depleting what is insufficient and supplementing what is excessive leads to death.

Externally, use Yansu (Coriandri Fructus) and Jiuzao (Wine Lees), steamed hot, to rub the body from head to toe. It is auspicious if the head and face have more rash. If delayed for days and unable to erupt, abdominal distension, asthma, dizziness, confusion, and烦躁 (restlessness) will lead to death.
1. Observing the rash, it often first appears behind the ears, on the neck, waist, and legs. If the rash tips are pointed but not long, and the shape is small and uniform, it is auspicious. If the color is red, it indicates Fire transformation; mild cases are treatable, primarily using Huaban Tang (Macula Resolving Decoction). If white, it indicates Blood deficiency, primarily using Yangrong Tang (Nourishing Glory Decoction). If purple-red, dry, dark, and dull, it indicates abundant Fire and intense toxin. Use Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder) and Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction), adding Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Gange (Puerariae Radix), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Liuzi (Arctii Fructus), and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) to nourish Yin, cool Blood, and eliminate heat. This embodies the principle of "nourishing Yin to retreat Yang." This is a critical condition with five deaths for every one survival. Externally, Da Qinglong Tang (Great Blue Dragon Decoction) with burnt human faeces is excellent. If constipated, add wine-processed Dahuang (Rhubarb) to purge, or Yuanshen Jiedu Tang (Scrophulariae and Detoxification Decoction) may be selected. If black, the heat toxin is extremely severe, a condition with ten deaths for every one survival; careful observation is required to avoid indiscriminate treatment.

Decocted in water and taken orally.
1. After the rash erupts, red shadows appear on the skin in patches. Strictly avoid Wind, Cold, and raw/cold foods. Violation causes skin closure and toxin stagnation, turning the body blue-purple, with toxins attacking inward, causing irritability, abdominal pain, asthma, and confusion. All symptoms arise. Failure to erupt fully leads to immediate peril; how can this be ignored?
1. If the rash emerges and then disappears, it is forced back by Wind and Cold. If not treated early, toxins attack inward, causing itching and collapse leading to death. Urgently use Xiaodu Yin (Detoxification Drink) combined with Shengma Tang (Cimicifugae Decoction); the rash will re-emerge and the patient will stabilize.
Shengma Tang (Cimicifugae Decoction):
Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gange (Puerariae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus).
Decocted in water, heated, and taken orally.
Xiaodu Yin (Detoxification Drink):
Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
Decocted in water and taken orally.
1. During fever, profuse sweating throughout the body indicates toxin resolution via sweat, opening of Xuanfu (pores), and easy eruption of the rash. Epistaxis (nosebleed) also indicates toxin resolution via bleeding. Neither should be stopped abruptly. If sweating and bleeding are excessive and uncontrollable, it is due to excessive Fire forcing fluids and blood to flow wildly. Urgently use Danggui Liu Huang Tang (Angelica Six-Yellow Decoction) to stop sweating, and Maohua Tang (Thrush Flower Decoction) to stop bleeding. Delay leads to Qi deficiency from excessive sweat and Spirit scattering from excessive blood loss, making treatment difficult.
Danggui Liu Huang Tang (Angelica Six-Yellow Decoction):
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shudi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) [equal parts].
Decocted in water. Add Fuxiaomai (Tritici Levis Fructus) externally to stop sweating.

Maohua (Thunbergiae Flos), Guitou (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Caput), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Add Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) and Baicaoshuang (Carbonized Herb Powder), decocted in water and taken orally.
1. During fever, vomiting, spontaneous diarrhea, or dysentery may occur. This is Fire pathogen forcing inward; upward movement causes vomiting, downward movement causes diarrhea. Severe toxin causes tenesmus, resulting in dysentery. For vomiting, use Zhuru Shigao Tang (Bambusae Succesaneus and Gypsum Decoction). For diarrhea, use Shengma Zexie Tang (Cimicifugae and Alisma Decoction). For dysentery, use Huangqin Shaoyao Tang (Scutellaria and Peony Decoction), adding Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), or a small amount of Dahuang (Rhubarb) for mild purging.

1. During fever, thirst is universal. Use Lv Dou Deng Xin Tang (Mung Bean and Juncus Decoction) with fried rice to drink, assisted by Renshen Baihu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction) to generate fluids and relieve thirst. Indiscriminate drinking of cold water risks fluid retention. Water entering the Lung causes asthma and cough; use Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen) to drain Lung water. Water entering the Spleen causes edema, distension, and diarrhea; use Baifuling (Poria cum Ligno), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) to drain Spleen water. Water entering the Stomach causes vomiting, hiccups, and diarrhea; use Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Chiling (Poria cum Rubro), and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) to drain water below the heart. Water entering the Liver causes hypochondriac pain; use Yuanhua (Kadsurae Caulis) to drain Liver water. Water entering the Kidney and Bladder causes urinary difficulty and scrotal swelling; use Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) and Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) to drain Kidney and Bladder water. Treatment must follow the symptoms.
Renshen Baihu Tang (Ginseng White Tiger Decoction):
Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Nuomi (Oryzae Sativae Semen glutinosum preparatum).
Decocted and taken orally.
1. During eruption, sore throat and inability to eat indicate toxic Fire stagnating and harassing the throat. Use Ganjie Tang (Licorice and Platycodon Decoction), adding Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus). Additionally, use Shiquan San (Ten Complete Powder) or blow Yusuoshi (Jade Lock Key) powder into the throat. Never blindly prick to bleed.

Grind into fine powder. Use a small amount, blown into the throat via a reed tube.
Yusuoshi (Jade Lock Key):
Pengsha (Borisovi Borax) [1 qian], Piaoxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) [1 strip], Pian Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) [0.05 qian].
Grind into powder and blow into the throat.
1. Cough, dry mouth, and irritability during eruption indicate toxin in the Heart and Lung, incomplete eruption. Use Xiebai San (Draining White Powder) or Huanglian Xingren Tang (Coptis and Apricot Kernel Decoction). If measles cause diarrhea, add Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Xiebai San (Draining White Powder):
Sangpi (Mori Cortex), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), Dengcao (Junci Medulla).
Decocted in water and taken orally.
Huanglian Xingren Tang (Coptis and Apricot Kernel Decoction):
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Xingren (Pruni Semen), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Gange (Puerariae Radix), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
Decocted in water and taken orally.
1. Uncontrolled diarrhea or frequent watery stools during eruption is a grave sign. Observe the rash: if dense, purple, or red, it is not harmful. Toxin is in the Large Intestine; without diarrhea, toxin cannot resolve. Use Pingwei San (Peaceful Stomach Powder) adding Gange (Puerariae Radix) and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) to resolve it. Once the rash erupts fully and recedes according to schedule, diarrhea stops naturally. If the rash has receded but diarrhea persists, the toxin is not fully cleared. Repeat previous herbs, adding Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) to separate and drain. Using Hezi (Chebulae Fructus) and Roukou (Myristicae Semen) causes abdominal pain, distension, and asthma, which is critical.
Pingwei San (Peaceful Stomach Powder):
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
1. Measles typically resolve within six shichen (12 hours). Eruption at Zi hour (Yang) and resolution after Wu hour (Yin), or vice versa, reflects the natural wonder of Yang generating Yin and Yin generating Yang. Gradual emergence and resolution indicate mild severity. If fever persists for three to four days after eruption without resolution, it is due to excessive Fire toxin, incomplete external release, and internal excess pathogen. Administer Huaban Tang (Macula Resolving Decoction).
Huaban Tang (Macula Resolving Decoction):
Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix), Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dan Zhuye (Lophatheri Herba), Nuomi (Oryzae Sativae Semen glutinosum preparatum).

Decocted in water and taken orally. Add Yuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) for treatment.
1. Measles naturally subside with fever reduction. If the body is covered but lingering irritability and frequent vomiting persist, the toxin remains in the Lung and Stomach. Use Huaban Tang (Macula Resolving Decoction). If constipated, add Dahuang (Rhubarb) to purge.
1. If fever returns and persists day and night after resolution, the toxin is not fully resolved, and evil Fire suppresses the muscles. Long-term effects include dry hair, withered skin, emaciation, and bone-steaming consumption. Urgently use Lushui Feier Wan (Aloe Child-Nourishing Pills), adding Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus). Delay leads to sleeping with eyes open, cold breath from nose/mouth, cold extremities, convulsions, and Slow Spleen Wind, which are untreatable.
Lushui Feier Wan (Aloe Child-Nourishing Pills):
Lushui (Aloes), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fructus), Maiya (Hordei Fructus germinatus), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Bai Wuyi (Chaulmoograe Semen), Huhuanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma alternative).
Grind into powder, form pills with Pig Bile the size of millet seeds. Take 50-60 pills with water.
1. After resolution, if the body is not emaciated but periodic high fever, irritability, tremors, palpitations, and mental confusion occur, Yin and Blood are depleted, allowing residual toxin to enter the Liver and transmit to the Heart. Tonify Blood and calm the Spirit using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) adding Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chen Sha (Cinnabaris), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Zhuye (Bambusae Folium), and Dengcao (Junci Medulla). Alternatively, grind previous herbs into powder, mix with steamed dough and Pig Heart Blood to form pills.
Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction):
Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba).
1. Toxin entering the Stomach and failing to dissipate causes black rotting gums and bleeding, known as Zouma Gan (Running Horse Gangrene). It spreads to cheek swelling, eventually perforating cheeks/cheeks, collapsing lips/nose, becoming Bengsha Huhu (Crumbled Sand Fox Enigma) critical conditions. Externally apply Wen Ge San (Clam Shell Powder) or Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder). Internally take Lutai Wan (Aloe Pill) to clear Stomach Fire. Cures are rare.
Wen Ge San (Clam Shell Powder):
Wenge (Concha Arcae), Xionghuang (Realgar) [each 1.5 qian], Kufan (Alumen) [0.05 qian], Cantui (Bombyx Batryticatus exuviae) [burnt to ash].
Rinse mouth with Rice Wash Water, apply medicine.
Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder):
Xionghuang (Realgar) [1 qian], Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) [1 qian], Muxiang (Moschus) [0.5 qian].
Mix evenly. Wash with Mugwort decoction, then apply powder.
Lutai Wan (Aloe Pill):
Renzhongbai (Human Urine Sediment), Lushui (Aloes), Shijunzirou (Quisqualis Fructus Flesh), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces) [equal parts].
Grind into powder, soak in steamed dough to form pills. Take with boiling water.
1. If diarrhea/dysentery occurred during eruption and was not cleared, it becomes Xixi Li (Intermittent Dysentery) after resolution. Regardless of red/white stool, with constant tenesmus, residual Fire toxin remains in the Intestines. Treat based on deficiency/excess. Excess: Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) to purge. Deficiency: Xianglian Wan (Amomum and Coptis Pill) to harmonize. Follow with Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction) combined with Yi Yuan San (Benefiting Origin Powder) to nourish Blood and move Qi. Hejian said: Nourishing Blood heals pus in stool; regulating Qi removes tenesmus. Truly spoken!
Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill):
Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, steamed), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Dahuang (Rhubarb, steamed hot).
Grind into powder, bind with paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills with warm water, adjusting for child's size and constitution.
Xianglian Wan (Amomum and Coptis Pill):
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [1 liang], Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus) [5 liang].
Mix with water, simmer in boiling water for half a day, remove, stir-fry dry, discard Evodia. Use only Coptis powder. Add 1 liang of Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), processed without direct fire. Mix powders. Bind Coptis powder with Vinegar Paste to form pills. Take 1-2 qian with Rice Soup.
