The treatment methods for sores and ulcers, I am not a specialist in this field, but their general principles cannot be unknown. The Classics state: When Ying Qi (nutritive energy) reverses within the flesh, carbuncles and malignant sores arise. It also states: Changes caused by rich and sweet foods can lead to severe Ding Chuang (hard, deep-seated boils). Reversal of Ying Qi necessarily involves stagnant fire; if it remains unresolved for a long time, it erupts as carbuncles or malignant sores. For instance, Fan Zeng (courtesy name Yafu), who was at odds with King Xiang Yu, died from a back carbuncle in Pengcheng. Regarding changes due to rich foods, I once observed a man surnamed Qian who loved eating pig head meat sold in markets, spending one hundred cash daily without fail. Pig meat itself can generate wind pathogens and phlegm, let alone the pig head. After a long period, it is likely to erupt on the back, becoming incurable. There is a legend about a Western merchant trading in Suzhou who ate pig heads frequently. A neighbor nearby was skilled in treating back carbuncles. Knowing the merchant carried substantial wealth, the neighbor anticipated that the toxins would eventually erupt and hoped to monopolize the treatment fees. He waited until the merchant returned, but there were no signs of illness. So he bought a boat to follow him. As they approached crossing the river, he asked the merchant's attendant, "Your master has an insatiable appetite for meat; what else does he eat?" The attendant replied, "After every meal of rich and fatty food, he drinks a bowl of strong Songluo tea." Hearing this, the neighbor sighed and returned. This implies that Songluo tea can resolve meat toxins. In treating sores and ulcers, nothing is more exquisite than dissipating them before they form. For example, Meihua Dianshe Dan (Plum Blossom Pointing Tongue Pill), with its refined and sincere preparation, can achieve miraculous effects. Furthermore, there is the method of garlic moxibustion. Regardless of any unnamed swelling and toxicity, Ding Chuang, or Back Carbuncle, if treated at the initial stage, it will dissipate immediately. Slice large cloves of garlic to the thickness of Kaiyuan Tongbao coins, place them on the affected area, and perform moxibustion with mugwort wool. The degree is appropriate when sensation shifts from painless to painful, and then from painful to less painful, approximately seven moxa cones. If a back carbuncle is in its early stages and it is difficult to identify where the toxin is concentrated, paste a wet piece of paper flat on the back. Observe which part dries first; this indicates the apex of the sore. Mark it with an ink pen, remove the paper, and then perform garlic-interposed moxibustion. Moxibustion can be applied anywhere, except on the face. If the condition does not dissipate after moxibustion, the toxic qi has already gathered, making it easier to ulcerate and heal. This is the most convenient and excellent method. Another prescription treats all kinds of sores; it can dissipate lesions before they form and facilitate ulceration once formed. The ingredients include White Chrysanthemum Flower (Bai Juhua), Tree Peony Root Bark (Dan Pi), Red Peony Root (Chi Shao), Honeysuckle Flower (Jin Yin Hua), Purple Violet Herb (Di Ding), Angelica Sinensis Tail (Gui Wei), Frankincense (Ru Xiang), Myrrh (Mo Yao), Forsythia Fruit (Lian Qiao), Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi), Rehmannia Root (Xi Sheng Di), and Licorice Root Nodes (Gan Cao Jie). Decoct in water and take orally. Externally, wash with a decoction of Cornus officinalis branches (Jiao Zhen). I treated a woman suffering from San Yin Malaria (Three-Yin Malaria) that had not resolved. Suddenly, she developed sores all over her body, each the size of a coin, numbering over a hundred in clusters, while the malaria ceased abruptly. This was latent pathogenic factors venting out as sores, thus clearing the Three Yin meridians. Specialists treated her using cold and cooling herbs such as Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian) and Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin), resulting in profuse pus discharge and reduced appetite. She sought my treatment. The prescription consisted of Raw Astragalus Root (Sheng Huang Qi), Codonopsis Root (Xi Dang Shen), Stir-fried Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Chao Bai Zhu), Honeysuckle Flower (Yin Hua), Angelica Dahurica Root (Bai Zhi), Poria Skin (Fu Ling Pi), Broad-leaved Citrus Peel (Guang Pi), Raw Coix Seed (Sheng Yi Ren), and Honey-roasted Licorice Root (Zhi Cao). After three doses, her appetite increased, and the sores stopped discharging pus. Removing Bai Zhi, adding Raw Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di), Angelica Sinensis Body (Gui Shen), and Astragalus Root (Huang Qi) stir-fried with honey, after four doses, scabs formed. After another four doses, she recovered completely.
