Gao Guozai treated Wei Ziyi. Before the onset of the disease, he often suffered from dry lips. He self-administered one liang of *Dendrobii Caulis* (Maidong, 麦冬), four qian of *Rehmanniae Radix* (Shengdi, 生地), two qian of *Scrophulariae Radix* (Yuanshen, 元参), one qian of *Schisandrae Fructus* (Wuweizi, 五味子), six fen of *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Gancao, 甘草), and three *Pruni Mume* (Wumei, 乌梅). Although there was a slight effect, the root cause of the disease remained. Gao Guozai said: This condition is suitable for using "Divine Water" (Shenshui). The method is as follows: melt lead, pour it onto the ground to form thin sheets, collect them, cut them into several long strips, drill a hole at one end, and hang them above a pot. Place liquor (Baijiu) in the pot. Invert a basin above the liquor, keeping the bottom of the basin close to the lead sheets. Ignite fire under the pot to boil the liquor; the vapor rises and strikes the lead sheets, causing water droplets to drip into the basin. This is called "Divine Water." Take this water orally. Since this water is generated from below rising upward, it can ascend the Yin fluids of the Kidney to rescue the upper dryness.
Yu Zhen commented: Divine Water is also recorded in ancient prescriptions. Its meaning became clear only after Mr. Gao's explanation.
Cheng Renfu treated a woman near forty years old. She wrote requesting medicine, stating that her throat and tongue occasionally felt as if hanging or falling, she had epistaxis when fatigued, and sometimes experienced generalized body pain. Although Cheng did not examine her personally, according to the classics, diseases of the throat and tongue all belong to Phlegm-Fire. Investigating the origin, it was due to insufficient Yin-Blood failing to control the deficient Fire in the Upper Jiao, thus causing the aforementioned symptoms. It is necessary to nourish the Yin-Blood of the Lower Jiao so that Water ascends and Fire descends, and the disease should cease. If harsh direct-treatment medicines are used heavily, the Fire in the Upper Jiao will not be eliminated, and Cold disorders in the Middle Jiao may arise, making it impossible for the previous illness to heal. Use Bawu Tang (Eight-Ingredient Decoction) plus *Platycodonis Radix* (Jiegeng, 桔梗), *Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium* (Chenpi, 陈皮), *Fritillariae Thunbergii Bulbus* (Beimu, 贝母), and *Scrophulariae Radix* (Yuanshen, 元参). For severe sore throat, add *Schizonepetae Herba* (Jingjie, 荆芥) and *Menthae Haplocalycis Herba* (Bohe, 薄荷). For pills, use Jiajian Bawei Wan (Modified Eight-Ingredient Pill) plus *Phellodendri Cortex* (Huangbai, 黄柏). Long-term administration brought stability.
Another case involved a man who developed a fleshy ball inside his mouth with a root, the stalk being over five cun long. He could only eat after expelling the ball by hand. Gentle pressure caused pain piercing to the heart. He took raw *Moschus* (Shexiang, 麝香) mixed with water, one qian per dose, taken frequently. After three days, the root dissolved, and he recovered.
Xue Ji treated a woman prone to anger, with a stiff tongue base and numb arms. Xue said: The tongue base belongs to Earth, restrained by Wood. He treated her with Liujunzi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) plus *Bupleuri Radix* (Chaihu, 柴胡) and *Paeoniae Radix Alba* (Shaoyao, 芍药).
He also treated a man with stiffness and pulling sensation under the tongue, insensitivity in the thumb and index finger, occasional constipation, and erythematous patches on the skin. Xue said: The meridians of the Large Intestine scatter under the tongue. This is Blood deficiency and Wind-Heat in the Large Intestine. He treated him with Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) plus *Sophorae Flavescentis Semen* (Huaijiao, 槐角) and *Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix* (Qinjiao, 秦艽).
Another patient had a swollen tongue protruding far outside the mouth. He was cured by fumigation with paper twists dipped in Castor Oil (*Ricini Oleum*, 蓖麻油) and smoked.
Another patient with Shanghan (Cold Damage) had his tongue protruding more than one cun, unable to retract for days. He was cured immediately by sprinkling Plum Blossom Pian Nao (Ice Borneol, Bingpian, 冰片) on the tongue. Severe cases required five qian to heal.
A woman postpartum had a tongue protrusion that could not be retracted. A doctor named Zhou instructed her to apply Cinnabar powder (Zhusha, 朱砂) to the tongue, assume a posture mimicking childbirth, and have two women support her. Then, pots and basins were secretly stacked precariously outside the wall and dropped to make a loud noise. Upon hearing the sound, her tongue retracted.
Jiang commented: The tongue is the sprout of the Heart. This must be due to difficult labor causing fright, leading to unsettled Heart Fire, forcing the tongue out through exertion. Now, Cinnabar calms the Heart Fire, and the sudden strange sound induces fear. The Classics state: "Fear causes Qi to descend." Thus, Fear conquers Fright.
*Benshi Fang* records: A woman had a tongue swollen filling the mouth, unable to speak. Only *Pollen Typhae* (Puhuang, 蒲黄) ground into powder was sprinkled on it, and she recovered overnight.
*Liangfang* records: A scholar suddenly bled from the tongue, leaving small holes. A doctor diagnosed this as She Nu (Tongue Epistaxis). Fried *Sophorae Flavescentis Flos* (Huaihua, 槐花) ground into powder was applied, and he recovered.
