1. After delivery, the puerpera should not lie on the bed immediately but be assisted to sit upright. Someone should press from the heart region down to below the umbilicus several times, so that residual blood will be discharged. Even when sleeping, pressing should be performed to prevent lochia (postpartum discharge of blood and mucus) from stagnating; this practice should continue for two or three days.
2. According to the *Chanjing* (Classic of Childbirth): Women need not only worry during labor but also require careful rest and recuperation postpartum. One must not assume that childbirth is over and act recklessly without regard for taboos. Though the initial transgression may be as slight as the tip of an autumn hair, the resulting illness can be as heavy as a mountain.
3. Immediately after delivery, preheat a lead weight or hard charcoal until red-hot, then quench it in vinegar to generate vapor that fumigates the room; this is excellent for resolving blood syncope and dispelling foul odors. Additionally, inhaling smoke from burning old lacquer is also beneficial.
4. The puerpera should not eat indiscriminately. Overeating, especially meat, can damage the Spleen and Stomach due to their weakness and inability to transform and transport nutrients, leading to internal injury and eventually Spleen accumulation disorders, which are serious. Shortly after delivery, she should consume only warm, soft white rice porridge; even minced meat should not be eaten in large quantities.
5. Immediately after delivery, allow the puerpera to drink half a cup of child’s urine and wine. After a short while, boil one egg (shelled) in light wine until soft, ensuring it is neither too much nor too hard, before consuming rice porridge.
6. In summer, when burning charcoal with vinegar, do so outside the room to let the scent enter; do not place any fire source inside the room for cooking porridge or decocting medicine, as this may cause irritability in the puerpera.
7. The puerpera should not drink enough alcohol to become intoxicated. Intoxication before or after delivery causes fatigue and immobility of the four limbs. Excessive alcohol intake postpartum may draw pathogenic factors into the limbs, potentially causing future symptoms of limb weakness and deep bone soreness.
8. The puerpera’s room should have no gaps to prevent evil wind from entering and causing harm. The walls around the bed should be enclosed with thick quilts.
9. Washing is prohibited within seven days postpartum; lukewarm water washing may begin after seven days. Full bathing or hair washing should wait until one month postpartum. No strenuous labor should be undertaken within 120 days.
10. If the puerpera feels exhausted, even if she is dressed while sleeping, she should be awakened frequently, which is advisable.
11. Postpartum fainting is often due to Blood Syncope. Inhaling vinegar fumes or fumigating with lacquer smoke usually stops it. For severe cases, administer Heishen San (Black Divine Powder).
12. Fainting caused by excessive postpartum bleeding is a deficiency-type syncope characterized mainly by unconsciousness and mental restlessness. It is suitable to use blood-nourishing formulas such as Xionggui Yangrou Tang (Ligusticum and Chuanxiong Mutton Decoction) or Danggui Jianzhong Tang (Angelica Sinensis Middle-Strengthening Decoction).
13. For postpartum dizziness and fever due to Qi deficiency from excessive exertion, methods to tonify the Middle and augment Qi are appropriate, such as Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Middle-Boosting Qi-Replenishing Decoction) or Xiangfu Bazhen Tang (Cyperus Eight-Treasure Decoction).
14. When postpartum Qi and Blood are extremely deficient, leading to loss of consciousness and unceasing collapse, it is an extremely critical condition; Qinghun San (Soul-Clearing Powder) should be administered via gavage. For any syncope or lockjaw, whether due to Blood Syncope or Deficiency Syncope, a unified method involves chopping fresh chives, placing them in a bottle with a spout, pouring boiling vinegar over them, sealing the bottle, and directing the emerging gas into the puerpera’s nostrils. This fumigation enters the Lung orifices, spreads through the meridians, restores Qi and Blood circulation, and revives consciousness.
