Raw Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata) and Tianxiong (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), if stored for a long time, must be sealed in a jar with calcined alkali (Duan Shi) to prevent decay. To process them into cooked Fuzi, soak them in the urine of a healthy boy (Tongbian) for one shichen (two hours), remove the skin and umbilical scar, slice them along the grain, then boil them with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), each about one qian, for several boils. After sun-drying, they can be stored for a long time without spoiling.
Mixing water chestnut (Biqi), black pepper (Hujiao), and copper powder allows the copper to be ground into fine powder. Boiling "Si Zi" (a type of plant) in water makes copper carvable.
Grinding iron filings (Tie Mo) with Chen Sha (Cinnabar), soap pod (Fanzijiao), and lychee (Lizhi) turns the iron into powder.
Melting tin (Xi) and mixing it with mercury (Shuiyin) while pounding reduces the tin to powder.
Place saltpeter (Xiao) in a deep clay pot. Add a few he (units of volume) of water to the furnace fire, then place the pot containing saltpeter on top. Cover the mouth with a tile to prevent ash from entering. In an instant, the saltpeter melts into liquid. Then insert cut pieces of Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), one cun long, into the pot. There will be flame but no smoke. Once the flame extinguishes, the saltpeter is considered "dead" and can be removed.
Take one clay pot, place one apricot kernel (Xingren) at the bottom, add eight fen of salt, press it firmly, cover with a tile, and melt into a liquid over high heat. Pour the liquid into an iron mold to form ingots.
Grind Pi (Arsenic Trioxide) and Xiao (Saltpeter), one liang each, into powder. Place in a pot and melt over high heat until liquid. When no smoke appears at the mouth of the pot, pour into a mold. The purified product weighs one liang and five qian.
For half a jin of Liu Huang (Sulfur), take an unspecified amount of Longwei Hao (Artemisia Longidentata) and Zi Bei Tian Kui (Omphalodes Verticillata), extract two bowls of their juice, add two bowls of running water from the east, and boil in a pot until dry. Then, decoct Baibu (Stemonae Radix) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), one liang each, in water, add the sulfur, and boil again until dry. Remove, grind more than ten thousand times, and prepare for use.
Make thin slices from steel or iron, store them in a mixture of salt and vinegar for a long time, then take them out. A natural crystalline substance will form on the surface. Scrape it off with a knife to obtain Tie Hua Fen (Iron Flower Powder). It greatly strengthens willpower, treats amnesia, breaks up accumulations and masses, and is applied to bamboo or wood splinters. Its efficacy far exceeds that of Tie Fen (Iron Powder).
Ancient coins that are fragmented and corroded are authentic. Heat them until slightly red, quench them in vinegar, and use them. For ophthalmic use, grind them; for powders, grind them together with walnut (Hutao). They are miraculous for treating heart and abdominal pain, Wu Lin (five types of strangury), and oral ulcers. In ophthalmology, ancient coins must be quenched in vinegar seven times before use.
This method is performed on the Spring Equinox. Saw segments of large Mao Zhu (bamboo species), leaving nodes at both ends. Scrape off the green skin. Drill a hole at one end large enough to fit a finger. Insert a single branch of peeled Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), five cun long, into the hole. Pack it tightly with wood shavings, seal with beeswax, attach a brick, and sink it into a latrine. Retrieve it the following spring, soak it in flowing river water for one day and night, then bury it in clean soil. For patients suffering from seasonal febrile diseases, mania, extreme thirst, or high fever, administer this preparation cold. One dose stops thirst and reduces fever, with excellent effect. If soaked in the latrine for two to three years, it is even better. This processed licorice is known as Ren Zhong Huang (Human Middle Yellow).
